I am starting to get a little freaked out...
I have not had my heat on once this winter. I live in an apt. and every year the landlord has to come in to bleed the register (not sure it is actually called a register...but you get the point :P)

I have not even had him in to do it because i haven't needed the heat.

Has anyone else been using less energy this winter because of the mild season?

I wonder if this might have a positive affect on the climate issue. Could cause and affect be working in a positive way?

1. It's Cold Here, And My Heat Is Crankin'
I think that you have been lucky

have no idea about whether there is enough of a trade off with exchange of gases when weather is warmer than usual (I think that is what you werer saying)

The thing is, that when polar caps melt, ice water flows down and cools the gulfstream and actually will cause colder weather in some places because of that.

Now, that isn't what is happening for my weather to be colder, but it is a possible long range effect that would probably affect the British Isles and Europe.

Less energy used, would take a long time to reverse the effects of global warming, but possible? Don't know.

It's an interesting query Fed UP!

On the other hand, if it gets really cold, we can find lots of ways to stay warm!

2. I guess we would have to have an estimate of how damaging
Edited on Mon Jan-01-07 10:38 PM by FedUpWithIt All
heating our homes is compared to say our automobile use and other things that are not on a downtrend.

2006 is one of the warmest on record worldwide. I wonder just how long it would be before we might see what affect this might have on the climate.

Clearly, ANY efforts to reverse the current direction would take years or even decades to see...things have already begun to self propel.

In the short time i ran out today i heard four separate people talking about how "scary" the weather is around here this winter. I have long been aware of the system at play but clearly others are starting to take notice. It started me thinking about what affect this and the mild weather might have.

I will take you up on that offer to keep me warm if the weather turns though SPK.

;)

4. I Remember Reading Recently
somewhere, (don't ask me where because I can barely remember what day it is LOL) that global warming will reach a certain critical mass and then it will actually speed up because it is not a linear trend (maybe that is the wrong term) because it as you said, self propels and makes it go faster.

I probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about but I do think that we are in deep doo doo and may already be too late to make a difference in the immediate future. If ever for that matter.

Then there are the naysayers that still say it's a liberal commie plot (I wish us liberals were that clever to have a plot) to take over the world.

I think instead we are just going to kill the Polar bears, thaw out the polar ice, raise the oceans, and have a gradual warming over the next 50 years that will change our lives for the worst.

But in the meantime, I'm here for ya Fed Up if you get cold! Or whatever! I'm here! ;-)

3. We were just discussing this at a New Year's party last night
Many of us only had the heat on the week after the snowstorm, when it got really cold. My thermostat is turned on, but the radiators are usually cold to the touch. It's odd. Most of us concluded global warming is very real.

5. Global Warming Is Very Real
I still can't believe that there are idiots like Michael Crichton who write books that are fiction that are then touted by idiots as some sort of proof that global warming doesn't exist.

Personally, I think we should take Michael Crichton to the north pole and set him afloat on an iceberg with a polar bear who is starving and see who wins that battle.

No global warming indeed.

6. We're payng less for heating oil. But we're also not getting any snow to recharge
the aquifers in the Spring.

We rarely have water-supply problems here in the Northeast, but we might next Summer.

7. I saw your picture in the other thread
....its no wonder you don't feel cold.

The east coast of the US has been staying warm due to winds from the Atlantic ocean blowing to the west and over the land. Normally the wind blows east toward Africa.

Normal ain't normal this year and it may never be normal again. The current science says that there are many positive feedback loops working to keep global warming on the increase. Check out the DU Energy and Environment forum for more.

8. My heater's on
and I live in Los Angeles.

It really only kicks on at night, because it's been in the 40s once the sun goes down. Oh, and they don't believe in any sort of weatherproofing here. Single-pane windows, zero insulation...

But yeah, the folks in SoCal are usin' the heat.

9. Hey there,
What's weird is if you are in NE Ohio, you should be under a decent blanket of snow at his point. I've been to visit me folks in Ashtabula, and nuttin, nadda, no blizzards... Very strange indeed. The land-lord thing is pretty easy to figure out. You're very cute, and he's, well, a land-lord. ewwww.
