Poll question: Greatest Children's Book or series |
|
If I get some good suggestions and one or two are not getting any votes I may put your suggestions in.
I left out The Hobbit (series) because I think it's more for adults than children.
Here are some I almost put in:
Treasure Island The Secret Garden The Polar Express The Mitten Charlie and the Chocolate Factory A Wrinkle in Time Nancy Drew Mystery Stories White Fang Black Beauty Bridge to Terabithia

Winnie the Pooh Dr Seuss Roald Dahl Harry Potter
I'd say these four are the best for the different age groups.
Edit to say I chose Harry Potter in the poll, that series has helped instill the reading bug in countless children. It really is amazing.

3. There is no way to pick just one. |
|
I have read (or have had them read to me) all but three on both list. The were all great and meant something different to me at different times in my life.

A Tree Grow in Brooklyn To Kill a Mockingbird Where the Red Ferns Grow Old Yeller Sounder
And too many other to name. It's so hard to come up with an all inclusive list because there are so many good ones.

Actually most of those do. It must say something that so many children's stories are so sad. I don't know what but something.
Oh, and I forgot about Little Women and Little Men.

7. I wrote a story that was autographed by Donald Sobol - |
|
He visited our school when I was in 6th grade. I loved the Encyclopedia Brown books, and my teacher asked if I could write a story in the EB fashion. I did, and it was read and autographed by Mr. Sobol. I was so proud.

I wouldn't mind reading that right now. My father would read that book to my sister and I when we were very little. Some of my most cherished memories are of my father reading to us. Ah, sometimes I just wish I could go back....

25. Susan Cooper's "The Dark Is Rising" series is worth an honorable mention |
|
If you love King Arthur fantasy and legends, you'll love those books. I've loved that series since I was a little girl. The books aren't terribly long, either--very easy for a young person to read.

|
I guess they are, but I bet there are as many adult readers as kids. (Like me!)
