Sigh. How much are eggs these days?
I have to go buy some.

Guess I'm going to Wild Oats today. No farmers markets open on a Tuesday, I don't think.

1. About $2.50-$4/doz for organic/free range/specialty, 89 cents for the regular kind.
Guess we'll have to call you flovo...

6. flovo...
I love it! Alas, they aren't for me, they're for my dog. Though, I fear if someone sees me, they're revoking my VeganClub Card.

7. Dogs don't need eggs. In fact, my dog is allergic to them
We must avoid them at all cost (try reading the side of a dog food bag to see what a challenge this can be), and the beag does just fine. It's one of the reasons she's vegan. And healthy.

9. Understood, but
My big guy's first chemo session was today, and the vet said that this is what he needs until I find a proper alternative.

14. Is it protein in general you need, or albumen specifically? There must be an alternative.
Either way, you can buy eggs that are relatively ethically produced.

Sorry to hear your dog's getting chemo. Hope all goes well.

22. Well, I'll be damned. In Brazil the regular ones are 75% of that.
Which means "fucking expensive" when paired with people's buying power.

8. Veterinarian says so.
I'm going to root around for an alternative, but until then...

Big guy had his first chemo today, and the vet said cooking for him was great, and the tofu is excellent but he needs more fat. He specifically mentioned eggs. Wild Oats allegedly sells the Certified Humane ones. That'll be a brazillion dollars, most likely.

13. Oh yuck.
I'm sorry. Jesus, cooking eggs stink.

Can you add some olive oil or flax or something to his food instead? I can't see how he'd be better off with all the unhealthy fats in eggs, to say nothing of what a disaster they are from an ethical standpoint. I don't want to give you a hard time, but I know you'd prefer a vegan alternative. LMK if you want me to get some books out and see what I can come up with.

15. I was thinking flax oil, too. Or canola or olive. My dog's regular food uses
soybean oil and full fat soy for fatty requirements.

3. 1.79 for 18 grade AA large eggs here. Why do you have to buy eggs?
Also - organics are about 3.99 a dozen here.

5. Go to localharvest.org and try to find some locally raised. More expensive,
but also more ethical on several levels.

16. Last summer I spent .85 for an 18-pack
they are now 2.35. I asked the grocer what was going on and he said, "The price of everything is going up!"

17. Eggs that cost $.85 were produced in a factory farm.
Do you have any idea how those animals suffer? I used to live near one--12 million chickens in 12 buildings. The smell was awful--and I lived 4 miles away.

Please, buy ethically produced eggs--they're better for the animals, the workers, the communities, the environment.

19. How about EggBeaters?
It is an alternative to eggs. I tried it and it's quite good, but I'm vegetarian and not vegan.

21. Unfortunately the EggBeaters are low-fat
which defeats the purpose of flvegan having to give his dog eggs in the first place.

What about avocado or coconut oils? Those are plant-based saturated fats. I'm not sure if they're appropriate foods for dogs, but it's a thought.

I hope your big guy is feeling much better very soon. I have a big buy too, although mine's a golden retriever. I'd do just about anything to ensure his health, too.

23. I have to look into antioxidant levels
of all the oils and other sources, then talk to the vet about them. Something about antioxidants and chemo not mixing well and defeating some of the purpose. Multiple studies say one thing, multiple studies say another. This vet is "highly decorated" in his field, so if he says eggs, then it's gonna be eggs. My ethics have to sit this one out for now, as doggie can't decide for himself.

Now ME, on the other hand...I'd be such a crappy patient.

26. Ew. I hear that.
I had to buy lamb baby food for my girl when she was dying (hemorrhagic sarcoma, as it turned out).

Really stunk up the place, but it made her feel better when she wasn't able to eat much else.

Sorry to hear that your buddy is having a tough time. I hope he handles it okay.

28. Will this work?
Soy baby formula! There's soy formula for preemies, etc. -

here's an organic one: http://www.naturesone.com/soy.php

Babies/infants need "extra fat" - so it might work for your pup! (How's he doing?)
