Matchpoint: Wow. Wow. Wow. Have become disillusioned with Woody Allen over the years, but did I mention: Wow. It's so pleasant to NOT know where a movie is going.
The Proposition: Okay if you're in the mood for graphic violence, filth, and human degradation. Some fine acting and cinematography, which is what I think captivated the critics (John Hurt is always fun to watch), but we both saw the end coming a mile away, which I hate. Anyone else see these?
On the book front, had 2 big disappointments
The Ruins: I thought "I bet this ends up giving me nightmares" and SO informed me that I kept waking him in my sleep to warn him about the maneating vines. So yes. It gave me nightmares. But if you're in the mood for a good yarn about rot & decay - go for it!
The End of the Story Naive woman takes job teaching writing to inmates. What could possibly go wrong?
