at first they seem like a little frightening, but they are mostly harmless unless you corner them. And they cannot contract rabies because they have a low metabolism. Interesting creatures, and quite cute. I feed them all the time.

They're real underdogs. They have a bad reputation and it's so undeserved. They're good guys to have around. Harmless and not destructive. They're not very cute, and they don't get much sympathy.
I think that's half the reason I like them.

Poor guys are gonna need another thousand years to get some understanding about cars though. I see a new dead one on the road almost every day.

My dog, being wise and medium-sized, backs down to possums. My neighbors had a big dog a few years ago who used to tear them to pieces. The possums never learned to stay out of their yard.

I'm not a possum fan, and I don't want them in my yard. The stray cats in my area are slowly chasing them out of the area.

go after them if they're near the house. I think dogs in general don't like possums.

From what I've read, though, possums and cats will largely ignore each other. I've seen this with my cats. They seemed almost oblivious to the presence of a possum and the feeling seemed mutual.

Apparently possums are not very territorial, if at all. When food is no longer available they just move on. Kinda like drifters. They don't dig and the only damage they're likely to do might be to get into a garbage bag left out overnight. I've lived in this house in a rural area for almost 30 years now and I've only had the garbage raided on a couple occasions that I remember. It might have been skunks, or even cats or dogs, as far as I know. I wasn't a witness to the crime.

Possums are not aggressive at all and would never bite unless threatened, as any animal, or person for that matter, will do. And as someone hear already pointed out they are practically immune to rabies. Your neighbors Grandma is more likely to be rabid than any possum you come across. They eat a lot of destructive grubs and insects. They are, for the most part, a benign and beneficial creature.

I've just recently learned this stuff about possums and I've completely changed my view of them. They're pretty good little guys even if they are bone ugly.

It's a couple minutes after that last sentence and I think it's finally sunk in. The guy had to defend himself barehanded against a badger. Right? Christ! I hope to hell I never have to do that. Yikes! I think a badger could easily kill a man if it wanted to, and it wouldn't be a good way to go. At all.

For ten minutes there all I could think of was some kind of bizarre boxing match, and I just couldn't get my head around that concept. My dumb.

6. Lizards.

I live in the Keys and I love to watch these little guys peeking around the corners of porches and walkways, doing itty bitty push ups, changing colors in mid stream. I have saved many a lizard from family cats (sometimes whole, often semi mutilated). I have fished more than a few out of the family pool and even considered mini chest compressions. Yep. Lizards are my pals.

They live on rocks in tidepools...look like somewhat rounded pyramids--sort of like barnacles, except that they are loners. Kind of like a one-shelled mussel or clam, with the fleshy part firmly fixed on the rock. I did a lot of tidepooling on the Oregon coast in my youth and used to know the different varieties.
