21. It might be
the same thing, considering there are upteen ways to spell the same word (I spell pierogies, pierohi, and it's sounded differently - like perro-heh).

Somewhat similar to pierohi (filling is marginally different - potatoes, green onions, cream cheese; the pastry is different); they're smaller, and baked in a creamy buttery dill sauce.:9

and are filled with ground meat. A bit different. There are probably endless variations on the same theme, all of them worth eating :7

Hi, how's she goin'?

I love those baked ones, my mom does great piroshki. I've done perohy myself, but I'm not very good at it. I know a baba who makes ones that are absolutely to die for. Have you ever had pelmeny? Kind of like tortellini.

Here's my little girl and me, last summer, in Glendon:

The grocery store there sells really good ones.

Why don't we just get snobby and call them Varenyky? Leave all these poor Anglos in the dust? :)

What's up for bites this summer - the Mundare Kubassa? :D

I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season!

I was down your way - well, past - for Christmas. Did a bit of a wave to you while whipping through Calgary. I went to Fernie for 5 days, and then, coming back, stayed over in Cochrane for an evening. Jinkies, has that town grown! :o

We will resort to calling them varenyky, then. We have to stand together on these things, ya know!!

I've never had pelmeny....sounds good, though!

58. No, we split it, but we couldn't find enough sour cream
A merry Ukrainian Xmas to you, too!

I see a lot of Cochrane, our family doctor is out there. We started with her in Calgary when she was first setting up a practice, and when she moved out there a few years later we stuck with her. It's a nice excuse for a ride in the country.

My mom brought a relative over from Ukraine about 16 yeas ago, and she brought the pelmeny recipe with her. Like I said, they look like tortellini, and are filled with a nicely spiced meat mixture. Toss 'em with the usual butter and onions. I found recipes on the interwebs, most of them look to be shaped more like ravioli.

While we're at it, how about cabbage rolls? As usual, Mom is an expert with those, the thumb-sized ones with rice inside. :9 The big ones full of hamburger? Ugh!!

22. In my world they are made something like ravioli
with a dough made of sour cream and flour. Inside is a potato/cheese mixture. They are boiled and then fried if you like. My mother grew up in a Canadian town filled with Ukranians and she learned to love them there. She made them for the family and now I make them for mine.

They're pretty good but not a low-calorie food!

33. Ding ding ding!
That's it, exactly! Except most people I know make them with just a very plain pasta dough, flour, eggs, water, salt. The sour cream is for putting on them later, along with the fried bacon & onions. We like them boiled, but I make sure there's enough to fry up for lunch the next day. You'd think that potatoes in pasta would be kind of ucky, but, boy, they're good!!

Aw, crap, now I have to either phone Cecile or get energetic, I want a big bunch! Maybe this Saturday. . .
