Legal types, a question.... If I wanted to put up banners that used well-known
advertising slogans, just as a joke, would I be liable to get in trouble? They're just to link from my site to the welcome page of the distro I develop for.

If you visit http://www.aliboom.com you'll see the type of banners I'm talking about, on the upper-right.

I want to use stupid things that have absolutely nothing to do with Source Mage, like:

  1. If you lived here, you'd be home now!
  2. Helps build strong bodies 12 ways
  3. The Choice of a New Generation
  4. Stronger Than Dirt!

that type of thing.

1. The First One Is Cool
You can use copyrighted material in obvious parodies or satires; other use may be infringement of copyright. Even though your product/service has nothing to do with Wonder Bread or Tide, you're not really parodying advertising and/or their slogans enough to stand up to a legal challenge.

The first one isn't really associated with one company/product, so you have more leeway with that one.

3. Just a guess, but most likely
Corporations are VERY defensive about their trademarks.

5. I should clarify that I really meant using *older* slogans that aren't active, regardless
of what I posted to give the idea of what I meant. However, I'm sure that even the inactive ones would be bad.

6. Depends on the exiration date of the trademark
From my understanding. Do some research.
Google is your friend.

8. Good luck, and ALWAYS remember
Be upfront and legal. Never give the opposition
a reason to attack. And if in doubt, consult a lawyer.
