Skinny girls to blame for late trains?
Skinny girls to blame for late trains?

"Subway late? Blame the lady wearing a size 0.

These women -- many fainting during the morning rush hour due to crash diets -- have been a leading cause of subway delays in the past year, according to MTA personnel.

"Sick customer," MTA-speak for a subway delay caused by an ill passenger, was the No. 3 cause of disruptions between October 2005 and October 2006, an analysis of agency statistics shows.

"You have women trying to get their bodies tight for the summer and they won¹t eat," said Asim Nelson, a Transit emergency medical technician based in Grand Central Station. "Not eating for three or four days, you are going to go down. If you don¹t eat for 12 hours you are going to get weak."

..............SNIP"

3. Do you honestly think being a size 0 is normal? That it is sexist to
discuss how people suffer in competition with each other to be tiny? It used to be just the models that did this..so they could look good..in print. Now the actresses. Now all sorts of women. It isn't healthy to be fainting near a subway that is for sure.

4. no my objection isnt to whether a size 0 is normal or not...
its the way that article is written with no real data backing up that it is really women on diets causing lateness.

6. Right. "Sick Customer" was the cause, not "skinny bitch."
:bounce:

It could be anyone having a medical emergency.

13. Did you even read the article?
"Talisa McGraw, 17, sheepishly admitted to skipping breakfast and dinner the night before she fainted on a downtown No. 4 train on her way to Manhattan Village Academy at about 8 a.m. last month.

"I felt dizzy and light and dropped down. Luckily someone got me a seat and called the conductor," she said. At Grand Central, Nelson brought her to his small office, monitored her vital signs and waited for an ambulance to take her to a hospital for a check-up.

In all, Nelson treated five women that morning, all of who fainted or reported feeling weak."

The transit doc treated 5 women who fainted from not eating in one day. They all caused delays in the trains. Why would you say there's "no data". There's obviously some.

14. thats anecdotal evidence.
read the article properly, there is no real data backing up this statement because MTA does not record what medical emergency causes delays.

5 women in one day may have been a specifically hot day or whatever. (many people dont eat when its too hot and then get faintish cos the subways in nyc get superheated. doesnt mean they are dieting. i havent ever fainted on the subway and have never dieted but have come close to fainting from the fucking heat in union square).

5. I'm a 4, but I've been a 0 this year. And I never faint.
"Normal" is a bullshit word. It depends on someone's bone structure, natural body makeup, and genetics. Don't tell me that I'm not normal - you don't know what is normal for me. Thanks.

9. Was an annecdotal story. I thought it would add some zip to the DU
lounge. I guess I was way off. Sorry if you are offended. Maybe this shows some sorta bias on my part..I'm not skinny that is for sure.

11. Well, I used to be decidedly "not skinny". I was a 14 at my heaviest.
I've struggled with my weight in both directions in my lifetime. In high school I was hospitalized for anorexia. In adulthood, I was borderline obese. Now that I am at a healthy weight, it's taken a lot of hard work to get here. Perhaps I was overly defensive in my comment to you because I've worked so hard to maintain a weight that is healthy. Sorry about that. :hi:

12. I've worked in the food industry and seen skinny girld approach the
food counter and struggle with what to eat. I didn't make fun of them then..it was just their way..to waver back and forth..to struggle over every meal..I don't know why I thought it was so funny today. Fainting isn't funny. Neither are skinny people. Congrats to you on winning a very tough battle. I'm struggling these days myself for a healthier lifestyle - just that I am on the other end. I should talk eh?

10. wouldn't this affect more than just the subway?
I mean, wouldn't there be massive losses in production, car accidents everywhere, etc, etc.

this is what Mo'nique thinks, lol

I probably shouldn't post that but it's freaking hysterical, and tongue in cheek anyway.
