Poll question: Prog Rock or Oasis - which do you prefer
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x6013980

I'm not going to stand idly by while LoZoccolo bases Prog Rock (many of my favorite bands are classified as 'Prog Rock' including Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, etc).

So which do you prefer - Prog Rock or Oasis?

1. oh god...it's like asking which do you prefer,
an ice pick in the right eye or an ice pick in the left eye?

2. Can I just shoot myself instead?
(Though one of my favourite bands is considered prog. That's beside the point though.)

6. I'd have to go prog rock, but only because...
many people classify Pink Floyd as such.

Other than that, I have to agree with the ice pick analogy

9. Pink Floyd didn't start off as a Prog Rock band but morphed into one
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=364

When Syd was with the band, the music was more Psychedelic Rock than Prog Rock.

11. Agreed, but...
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 03:37 PM by SteppingRazor
Floyd always had a certain psychedelic something that differentiated them from your typical jazz-inflected, King Crimson-type prog, or poppier prog like Rush or Yes. That psychedelia makes them a possiblity for me when most prog is not.

So, again, I vote for the prog.

Oddly, Oasis has plenty of psychedelic elements -- the swirling guitars and all that -- but I find their approximation a bit soulless.

10. since they mention bands like
Rush, Queen, ELO, and Kansas here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock
Gotta go with Progressive Rock. Doesn't that go with Progrssive Politics?

Not really a fair vote though, since I have never heard Oasis.

13. I'd be all about the Prog
It still doesn't invalidate LoZoccolo's definition though!

Even though I have to admit, now that I'm not pulling monster tubes on a daily basis Yes finds its way in my CD player with less frequency.

But sometimes, you just have to re-visit the old favorites. :)

15. I should not have said that they like music better than girls.
I should have instead said that they like music better than women. With a song like "Crosseyed Mary", one wonders if Jethro Tull fits the latter but not the former.

16. Depends on which kind of prog rock:
The overbloated, extremely pretentious prog rock in the likes of Genesis and ELP, or the trippy, spaced-out prog rock like Zappa, Yes, Pink Floyd, (and so on)?

18. Well since it was loosely defined as 'Prog Rock' you could pick your music
For me it would be a Yes/KC/Pink Floyd monster block with a sprinkling of some Jethro Tull, Queen, Rush and a few other minor groups tossed in

36. No; I hate prog rock because it sucks like an Electrolux on "high".
If flat, soulless, overly technical playing disconnected from emotion, lots of unnecessary instrumental wanking, and absurdly pretentious lyrics were what I wanted from music, I'd be listening to prog.

If I want virtuoso talent, I'll listen to John Coltrane, or Bill Evans, or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, or Daniel Barenboim, or any of a few thousand other extremely talented and accomplished instrumentalists and vocalists who have not only talent, but also the good taste not to waste it on playing prog rock.

38. Oh, of course
I mean, forget that it's pretentious, egotistical instrumental masturbation, I don't like it because it's not mindless pop music. Which is all I have in my collection, of course. You know, bands like Black Sabbath, that top 40 hit machine.

37. King Crimson is prog rock?
Hmmm, I wouldn't have classified King Crimson as prog, more experimental. But I love KC, so I guess I'll pick that category. I've seen Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp live!

Not huge fans of Yes or Jethro Tull, and they don't seem anything like King Crimson, so I am confused. But Oasis is total schlock, so I cannot go there.
