82. Chavez, I hope you give them a try this year.
Edited on Tue Jan-09-07 06:04 PM by Scout1071
The game has improved exponentially since the league started 10+ years ago. I was there in the beginning and it was the glorified big brother of the US indoor game. Now, however, is a bona fide league. I wish they would completely dump the original names and give them more traditional soccer names (this is slowly happening across the league with FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake, etc.) The mistake they made early on with the names was they allowed the shoe companies to come up with the names so they could market to kids. This was in the hey-day of the "Toronto Raptors" and other kid-oriented marketing schemes. But, Americans wanted football, not some US variation of it. So, they've spent the last 5 or more years trying to transition to the "World's Game", including a number rule changes (thank Gawd). And it is working.

Very soon you will see major partnerships with the EPL. Many more player tranfers between Europe and the US. Ronaldo and Beckham have spoken openly about their desire to play in the US and help form this league. Beckham already has a residence in LA (along with his soccer camps) and he named his son after Brooklyn. The Red Bulls organization has been working to bring him to NY. And they have the money to do it. We are not talking about when he's in his 40's as some type of retirement plan. I would imagine that you will see a major signing or two like this in the next 12-18 months.

You can't build Rome in a day. But I can promise you that the "world's game" will be coming to a pitch near you. And they will be competitive worldwide. Just give it some time. And patient support.

Scout

On edit - Chavez, if you don't fall in love with the new soccer stadium they are building, I'm flying out there to personally refund your money.

11. Leicester City?
If so, then as a Colchester resident I wish you well against Col U on Saturday!

Mind you, this year's Colchester United is the best ever, they get the ball on the floor and play some really good football. I would actually expect them to win well at Layer Road (the worst ground in the whole of the football league BTW, that ground really is an embarassment)

And I won't mention the Wednesday doing the double over Leicester this season. O8)

45. The trouble with Drogba...
...is the cheating. He's even admitted before now that he dives whenever he thinks he can get away with it. The game against Barcelona in the Nou Camp was a prime example of both the best and worst of Drogba's game. The worst cheating of anyone on the pitch, but when he stopped diving and play-acting and started playing football all of a sudden we had a world-class striker on our hands!

20. All Italy, all the time.
For Euro 2008, the Azzurri.

For the Champions League, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Roma.

For Serie A/B, Juventus.

Can't say I really despise any city team out there, though. This year's World Cup was great, and I was saying that before Italy won.

54. AC Milan's taking it on the chin.
They're in the middle of the pack in Serie A, along with the other clubs accused of match fixing last year.

It'll be interesting to see them play Celtic next month in the Champions League. We'll find out if they're able to rise above their difficulties, but even I am a bit pessimistic about their chances.

Can't wait for the once and future champs, Juventus, to return to Serie A. If I'm correct, they're the only undefeated team in Serie B. Gianluigi Buffon rules!

62. Well, I'll always pull for the Italian teams (or Italian players outside Italy)...
...but I just love watching the games, no matter which world-class team is playing. I don't have antipathy toward any one team like I would, say, the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. It's probably because I live here in the states and haven't cast any team in the role of villains.

Thanks for the ITVN tip. I don't know if I can get it, but I'll look into it.

Good luck to Celtic vs. AC Milan on 2/20. It should be great.

32. As an american it was very tough to pick a team
I was born a NY Yankee fan and wouldn't change it if I could. And our college basketball team in CT is our whole state's obsession. But I started my football life following Chelsea because of the players I liked in the World Cup. I fell out of love with them as I got more obsessed with the game. I embraced Newcastle because of the devotion of the supporters and Newcastle Upon Tyne seems like a beautiful place among other factors. If I had only picked up the game while Alan Shearer was still playing - alas.

5th place, if I am not mistaken.

I lived near Bolton a few years back and got to watch them play at Reebok Stadium. Always a good time!

96. Tottenham Hotspur
I know nothing about soccer other than my dad's cousin played for them in the 1960's or something.

Other than that I remember Trevor Francis and the Detroit Express back in the late 1970's when I was a kid.
