Wild card playoffs are over and we're down to 8 teams - who is gonna win the Superbowl?

11. Eagles all the way!
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 02:08 PM by mvd
I feel so happy for us. Even I thought The Eagles were dead, and now we're enjoying the ride! Even if we lose next weekend, I'll consider this a successful season. But I think we can win the Super Bowl!

13. Yeah yeah. Saints lost to 'skins, Eagles beat 'skins. Extrapolate all you want...
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 03:07 PM by Brotherjohn
... but, um, who beat the Eagles on Oct. 15th?

Here's a hint: the same team that's going to beat them on January 13th!

:D

The Eagles are on a roll, no doubt. Longest win streak of any team other than San Diego. And yes, the Saints lost to the Redskins and the Panthers in the last 3 weeks of the season.

But no doubt about it, the Saints are also on a roll. They closed the season 4-2, but in reality, it was 5-1. They didn't even dress two Pro-Bowlers against the Panthers, and sat their third (Brees) after his first series (a series in which, BTW, he promptly drove the team down the field for a TD).

I firmly believe the Redskins loss was an anamoly and, hopefully, a lesson learned. Otherwise, this Saints team is playing like a team that just beat the Giants, Cowboys, Niners, and Falcons by an average of more than 3 touchdowns each. How much did the Eagles beat those teams by in the losing weeks of the season?

ON EDIT: Okay, the Saints didn't actually put 2 Pro-Bowlers on inactive list for the Panthers. But they did put the following on inactive, including one Pro-Bowler, and sat a second Pro-Bowler, Brees, after 1 series: DE Will Smith, RB Deuce McAllister, WR Joe Horn, CB Fred Thomas, and TE Mark Campbell... all starters.
They also pulled Bush very early, and several other starters. In short, they clearly completely wrote off the Carolina game, with the goal of keeping the players healthy for the playoffs.

16. I wouldn't get too confident
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 03:21 PM by mvd
That's how teams lose. The Eagles will probably play better against the Saints than they did against the Giants.

BTW, there are no style points. Good teams find any way to win.

18. Oh I can be as confident as I want. The TEAM can't be, and I don't think they are.
The one thing that distinguishes this Saints team from all the other (miserable, pathetic, heart-breaking, losing) Saints teams I've followed my entire life is this: They DO take it one game at a time, and they DO consider every opponent worthy. And while very confident, they are not ever overconfident (I don't think that's what happened w/ Washington, I think they were just flat, emotionally spent, "any given day", whatever). AND, they don't get rattled at all, even when a team jumps out ahead of them.

These Saints seem to have their head on their proverbial shoulders, and in the right place, more than any other team I've ever followed. Not to put Katrina into play, but I think that's a big part of the reason why. They HAVE to have their heads in the right place after going through that. It gave each and every person associated with the Saints franchise the kind of perspective they couldn't have gotten just from good coaching, good manners, or whatever.

I don't know if I'd call that an "advantage", but it's there.

20. The players can start believing it if everyone tells them so
That they will win, I mean. I think that on paper, the Saints have the advantage, but no one thought the Eagles would be here. So I'm about 50/50 on an Eagles win.

22. Well, yeah, if they listen. But I don't think the Saints even believe their own hype...
... this year. They just go out and play the game. They're driven. Good teams always are, and seldom buy into what anyone says about them.

Maybe the Eagles are that kind of team this year, too. Haven't followed 'em enough to know. but a 6 game winning streak with a backup QB to win the division tells me maybe they are.

Probably why Sean Salisbury keeps saying the winner of this game will win the NFC (and he says it'll be the Saints, but he keeps saying "whoever" wins it).

As to the whole shebang, I think the AFC has been coronated a bit early. Let's see what happens when they come up against the Saints! (okay, or the Eagles... IF they get the shot)

23. Chicago might not be that strong
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 04:23 PM by mvd
They aren't on the roll that the Eagles and Saints are. Their offense is really struggling. So Sean is right to think that IMO.

Anyway, hope it's a good game! As I said, the Eagles have already exceeded my expectations. :hi:

19. Oh, and I agree there ARE no style points. A 6 game win streak is something...
... no matter what the scores were.

I was just trying to make the point (based on somebody else's bringing up the 'Skins, which I think was just to get under their "skin" b/c they're from DC) that despite the Saints losing to the Redskins, their stretch at the end of the year compares favorably to that of the Eagles, even though they lost 2 games to the Eagles none.

They're both playing at a high level was my point. It's going to be a GREAT game!

(but don't be too disappointed if the Saints win by 20 :D)
