The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Mon 1/8/2007)
Fruit for the Fall

How is it that I can no longer kiss my lover's lips?
Aren't they fruit for the fall and every vined thing
that cannot hold to the vine when sweetness strips
the flesh and the burst fig with its split-lip stings
my lips in peel's seed-pearled jellies too ripe, too ripe --
and the delicious tart sugar of the green apples
pastured are pattern and prototype
for the skin of my lover's lips. So wild and graceful
the crooked cut valentine of his scissored upper lip
and the tongue withdrawn like the bait set inside the trap
unsprung in strong silvered metal. I think of the pip
mapping the inner-folds of the orange and the moist-dangled pap
sucked by some litter-- turned from the lips of my lover
I am more alone than Jesus who could touch the lepers.

Valerie Wohlfeld

1.  "like the bait set inside the trap"
That line has so much imagery. I was reading this today.

Ye lust, and have not:
ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain:
ye fight and war, yet ye have not,
because ye ask not.
Ye ask, and recieve not,
because ye ask amiss,
that ye may consume
it upon your lusts.
