Who would like to get old?
I mean, our culture is so damn youth oriented.......

So, I guess the choice is ......

Get old.........

Or die young......

Not for this chickie! I'm already there, and I want to be even older before I kick off!

What do you think? Let me hear you!

just going to bed after a good night of partying and dying peacefully in my sleep....when I'm 119.

15. That is exactly how my FIL died in May.
After a great meal, some really nice wine and a phone call to his beloved.

We all should go so peacefully.

I'm counting the medical community to make fantastic progress with aging-related issues before then, though.

*diseases and illnesses
*wrinkles
*cellulite
*age spots
*"droppage"
*"saggage"
*menopause-related issues
*slow-driving syndrome (according to my husband, I may already have this).

68. Those are all good medical goals ...
... which you may need YEARS down the road, so there's plenty of time to invent and test them.

As for "SDS", maybe you can get a transfusion from my wife, who is an incurable lead-foot. But with Slow-Driving-Syndrome, you won't get as many tickets.

6. I hate getting old but I plan to do it anyway.
Particularly in a youth-oriented culture aging is a challenge. Sometimes I think that God, if there is one, has us age so we are forced to focus on something other than sex, beauty and love. Cruel. :P

133. Hey, Sex Is Forever Baby!
I work with much much older people than Peggy, she's a spring chicken comparatively- a generation back or more from most of the folks I work with.

Sex is something that changes but doesn't disappear.

I still feel like I'm 18, but my body doesn't know it anymore. I doubt that I will feel a whole lot different in that respect when I'm 84.

8. The older I get
the odder this culture seems to be to me. I don't understand exactly why it is that it is assumed that young people have a monopoly or sole entitlement to certain things; anything from dancing in public to sexuality. It is the most bizarre construct, that certain things are 'for the young' including certain forms of social expression. I'm mystified and fascinated by it. I could go on and on, but I won't...I hope this is relevant to your topic, it was just what popped into my head when I read it.

My topic is always open to whatever you think about it!

And I agree with your thoughts, too......

The young do not have any such monopoly, IMHO......

I think we can lead them by example........

And show them just what we are capable of!

And that is plenty, believe me........plenty!

Thank you for your thoughts today........

and I think I will be. Every astrologer/palmist/tarot card reader or whatever that I've ever talked to has said I'll live to be very old, and the last one even said 93 and that I'll be living a good and happy life right up until the end. I can see it happening because I'm 60 now and feel great.

Thud is a good book if you like the Samuel Vimes books. Some people prefer the other running threads, like the Death books, or the Witches books.

I thought Thud was good, but not one of the best.

Never going to be 'old,' but ain't gonna die young, either. :D

Barring accidents -- no problem because I am, indeed, indestructible -- my genes should let me live a long, long time and do so with good health. Live is the operative word...not necessarily full-tilt, boisterous "look at me, I'm alive" stuff, but whatever to me best represents quality of life. I wish it for each of us...

I think there is a lot for "seniors" in our culture. Plenty of recreation, job opportunity (based on the people I see in retail around here) and opportunity for service. The drug industry seems to be busy developing drugs to keep us going after our 40's - all the erectile dysfunction drugs I see advertised on tv. I have no plans to end it all. The wife would just remarry and the new guy would get to use my new boat and golf cart.

I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up
Not me,
Not I,
Not me!
So there!
Never gonna be a man,
I won't!
Like to see somebody try
And make me.
Anyone who wants to try
And make me turn into a man,
Catch me if you can.
I won't grow up.
Not a penny will I pinch.
I will never grow a mustache,
Or a fraction of an inch.
'Cause growing up is awfuller
Than all the awful things that ever were.
I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up,
No sir,
Not I,
Not me,
So there!

72. I have friends who are younger than I am who are already lying about their ages. I refuse to
do that. I'm 35--soon to be 36 and proud of it.

I remember meeting the elder sister of a Taiwanese neighbor and being so pleased to hear her refer to herself as the older, wiser sister. I like that they revel in the wisdom that comes with increasing years. I always think of that when I hear someone lie about his/her age.

So, yes, I do want to get old. And, I don't think "old" even starts until one reaches 80.

It's not the numbers that bother me, but the side-effects. I don't like the thought of becoming decrepit, losing my independence, and watching those around me die.

There's getting old, and then there's living too long -- I'd sooner check out before the latter.

97. My dear sweet Peggy!
You are not old by any stretch of the imagination, either chronologically or attitudinally (Not sure but,I think I just made up a word!)

Anyway, I work in a retirement center with a full range of residents from independent to assisted living to nursing care. I think of my dear gran who died at 78 and know that was too young. I look at the folks I work with and can only hope that if I live to be old it would be without some of the health issues I see some of them deal with. I think when I get to the point I can no longer take care of my hygeine or control my bodily functions, I will want to check out on my own steam. Or if I begin losing my cognizant abilities. But one doesn't know how one will feel when the time comes. All through life, we all see to accept and make adjustments for the changes in our bodies as they come along. Who knows what will happen?

I think you are right that there are choices - physical, mental, and emotional- that can be made to ease the aging process along.

Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 09:46 PM by Redstone
because I lost my concentration due to the (graphic detail deleted) that a 23-year-old chica was giving me as I howled down the highway at 167 miles per hour.

The girl, of course, survives - miraculously, without a scratch - and delivers the terrible news to Mrs R, who replies, "I'm just happy he kept his sense of style until the end," and adopts the young lady.

108. I plan to age as gracefully as I can, while having the most fun
I agree with you that our current society is very youth-based and youth-obsessed, but I also believe that as the Baby-Boomers enter old age the attitudes will shift to accomodate that growing population. I don't know the exact figures, but there will definitely be a significant increasing percentage of aging, HEALTHY citizens in the years ahead. Life expectancy is increasing, people are much more health-conscious and we're waking up, as a culture to the deeper levels of well-being, too.

BTW, You are aging gracefully and well, my dear Peggy. :loveya:

I am sure you will have something to show for having lived your life, no matter how long or short it may be!

I really have found some comfort in these lines from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children;

To earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others to give one's self; to leave the world a bit better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived~~

This Is To Have Succeeded.

I hope they will help you, too........

What's so bad about not having died yet? When I was 20, I could do bunches of one armed pull ups, but I was an idiot. Age has its compensations. All in all, I find the process satisfactory, despite the fact that it is inevitable if you live long enough ... I know you know what I mean.

160. Shiznit, I've had this planned for YEARS
Here's the daily regimen, once I hit 80 (aka my prime).

Get up at the buttcrack of dawn, take four extra-strength Motrin. Eat a sausage biscuit, washed down with black coffee you can stand a spoon in. Hell, eat two. Take a tub bath, shave, then get dressed to the nines (three-piece suit and tie at least, if not an actually morning coat). Drink a quart of whiskey. Call the local newspaper and GIVE THEM HELL.

Just passing the karma along; we had a 90-year-old gent who used to do the last two on a semi-regular basis when I worked as a cop reporter for the Macon (Ga.) Telegraph.

175. Actually, I do kind of look forward to it.
Menopause sounds like quite a relief. I think it might be kind of nice if men didn't sexualise darn near everything I say or do. The older I've gotten so far, the smarter and more balanced a person I've become.

Sure, wrinkles, chin whiskers, accelerated decrepitude and body aches don't sound like they'll be a picnic, but there are certain amounts of grouses to be made about everything.

Anyway, getting old beats all heck out of the alternative.

I can definitely tell you that menopause is a relief!

And the fact that you're smarter and more balanced is all to the good....

Absolutely, it beats the alternative by a very large country mile!

We always have to take the bad along with the good.....and getting older is no different than any other stage of life in that regard...
