because the BBWA guys are dumb, they like to "not vote people in on the first ballot" but reserve judgement until later. Blyleven, for instance, had been steadily increasing his vote totals until this year.

Gossage, as another example, got over 71% of the vote this year, which is by far the highest he's ever gotten--he'll probably get in next year since it's not a big year for retirees.

Davey Concepcion all should be in the HOF. Davey was Ozzie Smith before Ozzie was Ozzie Smith (just without the back flip). Concepcion showed all shortstops that followed how to make plays on that damned AstroTurf. Plenty of Gold Gloves, better offensive stats than most of the SS in the HOF (including Smith), and just a touch below Ozzie on defense. Davey's just getting dinged because he was on the same team as Bench, Rose, Morgan, and Perez -- and all of those guys believe that he should be in. Screw the writers -- except for local good guy Hal McCoy, another HOFer (writer's wing) with ties to the Reds.

16. You can always find examples

of players whose numbers go up. Usually they're the ones who should've gotten in on the first ballot, but some joker with a personal agenda screwed the pooch (and then invariably wrote a column to brag about it). For years after that, other writers will campaign for the player to rectify the injustice.

But I stand by what I said earlier. In the majority of cases, if a player doesn't make it in his first year of eligibility, he tends to get forgotten.
