Alrighty.....Who out there has had a Vasectomy and wants to talk about it?
I'm 47, have a 36 year old wife and three kids ages 8, 6 and 5 months. I feel a little odd sterilizing myself, but know that it's a logical move......How long does it hurt?

2. Simple procedure
had mine done years ago. Much easier alternative for us than to have the wife go through tubal ligation. Mild discomfort for just a couple days.

4. Got mine at age 29.
No regrets at all.

The worst part (for me) was the injection of the local. After that, it's just a matter of concentrating on not looking while the doc pokes around your nads with a scalpel.

A couple of days of mild discomfort, which are made less uncomfortable by stuffing bags of frozen peas (one at a time!) down your shorts to keep the swelling down.

No scar, either, and everything appears the same afterwards. Looks, smells, and (reportedly) tastes the same.

If you want to ask any more questions, please feel free to PM me.

5. Very little pain and discomfort
The anesthesia injections hurt but that's about it. Thanks to the pre-op valium I almost fell asleep during the procedure. I was in and out of the clinic in less than an hour. I spent the rest of the day on the couch napping and watching movies.

I was back to normal 48 hours later but I waited a week before attempting a bike ride. Since then I've done 50 mile rides with no discomfort.

Of course you're welcome to PM me with any other questions.

7. Thanks for bringing this up...
I have been considering asking Mr. Malta Blue to get one. He wants me to get tubal ligation. I think this is a better option as far as discomfort is concerned judging from what I have read.

10. Please tell...
As I mentioned in my post above, my husband and I are considering options. I think the vasectomy is less discomfort, etc., from what I read here. How was your experience?

11. It was fine, except...
the gas they use to blow up your belly for the arthroscopic procedure is always uncomfortable. You get cramps and back pain; at least I do. I have tiny little scars and I was back on my feet within a day. I had the tubal cauterization and I got it done when I was 29 - I'm 34 now and still not preggie, so it apparently works! :D

Good luck to you - feel free to ask specific questions.

14. The big V is far less invasive, can be done in a dr's office, and is
more reversible, if you ever want to change your mind later.

16. Just ask him to talk to a doctor
I had to have a screening appointment where all my questions and concerns were answered in a trustworthy manner, a little more reliable than an Internet message board even though I can vouch for the fact that it was virtually pain free with no negative repercussions.

35. Exactamundo, mb! For him, it's a very simple in-office procedure.
You've gone through enough already. Pregnancy, probably with morning sickness and other discomforts, labor, delivery, episiotomy (ACK!), hemorrhoids, nursing (possibly with plugged milk ducts or mastitis) etc, etc, etc.

31. that was my experience with a tubal as well...
although I was older.

Tiny, tiny little scar in my belly button, and one at the hairline.

He also cleaned out some endometrial tissue, which I'm grateful for ... now I don't have pain on the right side anymore. The tubal will keep the endometrial tissue where it is supposed to be in the future.

37. I had one done that "didn't work."
I found out a little over 3 months later when I began puking at the smell of cooking bacon. That baby is 27 now. I was due exactly 1 yr from the date of the laproscopic tubal cauterization. I then had the regular procedure with the bikini cut done the day after my son was born and my new OB-GYN said there was absolutely no scar tissue on the tube and that he didn't believe it had ever been cauterized.

I've also know a couple men who had vasectomies that didn't work either. BUT..I would like to just toss out there that a vasectomy is easier to check. The men I knew whose vasectomies didn't take, had never gone back to be checked.

19. My wife was looking at that as an option
I believe that the Vasectomy is a better option because it seems less invasive and is reversible, not that I would think that would happen......But I appreciated her thinking about it. She told me that it was difficult to think about sterilization and that she had a better idea of the thought process I was going through. We were thinking about having both procedures done....

24. Mine didn't hurt
But I followed my doctor's instructions to the letter.

Honestly, you'll feel good enough to go out and be active. But don't make that mistake!!!1

The lack of pain is not an indication that you are as tough as you think. Start playing volleyball (I know someone who did), and you'll really regret it.

27. Funny story:
I had mine done by a doc recommended by a friend, who was actually the doc's nurse and assisted. The local anashetic was not as effective as it should have been so I experienced some pain and she helped me through it by holding my hand.

That night, she and her hubby "helped" my recovery by taking me and my ex to see "Body Heat" which, back in those days, was considered an extremely arousing movie.

Everyone but me thought it was funny. :-)

18. How long does it hurt?
All the way down to the tip.

But seriously, I didn't feel a thing after the topical aneasthetic was applied. I took the pain meds that they prescribed and had very little discomfort.

True Story: The doctor applies a topical, and then waits a bit for giving me a shot "down there" for the local. Before he give me the shot, he says, "Now in just a second you're going to feel a little prick." I replied, "As will you."

It's probably not a good idea to have your doctor laughing hysterically with a sharp object so close to your Johnson, but I like to live dangerously.

25. Sore for about 10 days...
although I've had tooth aches that were much worse. Swollen (no pun intended!) for about the same. Think elephant balls, that'll give you some idea. Apparently, some people experience this, though not many.

Depending on the procedure, the worst part was removing the "staples" on about the 3rd day.

Still, all in all, it's a very "liberating" experience.

26. Had one about 20 years ago.
They didn't inject me with enough local before they started, so the first cut hurt like a motherfucker. But they quickly corrected that mistake and then it was on with the show. Waddled across the street and had a nice enchilada plate with some cervezas immediately after. Didn't hurt too long. Worked.

It is a very quick and painless procedure. The peace of mind that comes with it is well worth it.

29. Ever heard of "blue balls"?
Well mine were BLACK AND BLUE. From my waist all the way to my knees (the black&blue, not my balls ...).

And if you're squeamish about it, ask your doc about putting you under. I did, because frankly I didn't care for the idea of ANYBODY coming at The Boys with a sharp object and I sure as hell didn't want to SEE it!!

So I woke up a little uncomfortable ... which wasn't too bad. But when I got home and was sitting in my favorite chair with a bag of ice on my nutsack ... here comes my youngest son who runs into the room and JUMPS INTO MY LAP, KNEES FIRST!!Jesus H. Keeeeeerist I've never felt pain like that before.

After that, I don't remember how long the discomfort lasted. Whatever it was, it was nothing compared to The Jump.

34. I was a little sore for a couple of weeks
Blue balls is a good analogy.

This was about 10 years ago, the doc used the then-new incisionless technique. Just pokes a hole and roots around. He was a very relaxed and funny guy, it wasn't traumatic in the least. At least for me; there was another man in the waiting room who was literally shaking like a leaf.

38. not bad at all
I had it done - couple of days of mild discomfort and whatnot - not really bad at all. I had it reversed roughly 2.5 years later and got my wife pregnant almost immediately. The reversal is a bit more invasive - but I guess I'm going to get fixed again in the near future. It was so fun I'm going to do it twice...

39. I had mine at age 31.
To be honest, fulfilling the "shave every hair" requirement was a lot worse than the actual operation.

You'll get 2-3 days of well-deserved pampering from your lady, too.

It doesn't even really hurt, either. Just don't be a dumb fuck and think "Hell, this is no problem, I can return to my normal routine now." Whatever the doctor says your rest period should be, add a day to it. When my boss had one done, he went home the same day and hours later mowed the lawn. He paid for that in spades; the boy was swollen up like a volleyball.

Make sure you realize that you're going to have to get TWO spermless samples before you can go sans birth control, and that you're going to have to ejaculate a few times to kick out your remaining swimmers. My doctor told me "conventional wisdom is ten, which means fifteen is logical, so make it twenty."
