Members of Phanta "Jack" Phoummarath's fraternity scrawled obscenities and drew pictures of genitalia and the University of Texas at Austin logo on his body while the UT freshman was passed out, dying from alcohol poisoning, according to an autopsy report released this week.
The Houston freshman, a pledge of Lambda Phi Epsilon, was found dead Dec. 10, 2005, at the fraternity's house.
In the autopsy report, Dr. Roberto J. Bayardo, the former Travis County medical examiner, ruled that Phoummarath, 18, died accidentally from alcohol poisoning. The report showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.41, more than five times the legal limit in Texas.
"It was degrading and despicable what they wrote on his body," said Houston attorney Randy Sorrels, who is representing the Phoummarath family in a civil lawsuit against the fraternity and some of its members.
A Travis County grand jury last month indicted three fraternity members on several counts of hazing and providing alcohol to minors. They face misdemeanor charges.
