I just received a summons for jury duty!

I'm kinda excited about it even though I know it's going to be a huge PITA.

Chances are I won't even get selected, since I possess a law degree. And, well, let's face it...typically there is one side that doesn't exactly have the law on their side and the last thing that party wants is a juror who can see through their bullshit.

And then there's my staunch opposition to the death penalty, most drug laws, and California's 3-strike law. Yeah. I'm a catch!

I'll be sure to report back (inasmuch as I can) with a description of my experience!

BTW, kudos to the Los Angeles Superior Court for snagging me so quickly. I've only lived here slightly over a year.

only time I have been called all the cases got dismissed/rescheduled. I looked at the schedule and they are against a timber company and 1 against a major oil company. I think I would've been dismissed also, but was looking forward to it.

3. My wife went yesterday.

Was called in for one case about something to do with a dog, but wasn't picked, she thinks, because we have two dogs. So she's done for three years.

I have never been called. She's been called 3 or 4 times since we've been married though. Strange that.

4. Apparently it's random

but I know quite a few people in LA County that get called with amazing frequency. But then, we're eligible every 12 months.

7. In my county it's not even remotely random

24 months is the minimum time between jury service....I get my summons every 24 months plus 1 week. This has been a constant for the past 9 years. I can just about set my watch by it.

5. Been called

Last Autumn, I was called. Luckily, I wasn't picked for anything. By midday, we were set free and I went to work. Except for one, when the weather was warm and sunny. I caught some rays instead.

Once a jury summons caught up with in New Zealand from Arlington, Virginia. I told them come and get me.

6. I was called repeatedly when in the Army

I would get a summons from my home town (where I was registered to vote), and have to return them saying "sorry, cant make it, Im stationed overseas"

Being the daughter of a former LAPD homicide detective usually scares the defense team. However, I simply hate the waiting around, it makes me crazy.

I'm guessing that's pretty much a whole day of boredom thing? I'll be taking a book and whatever else I can think of for entertainment.

But hey, at least I won't have to go to work that day! ;)

Now, if I actually got on a jury that would be ok and I'd gladly serve. But I never do - so I wait, get picked for interviews then get told 'thanks, but no thanks' because of the police connection. So, I feel it's just a waste of time.

12. I've Been Summoned For Jury

several times actually

I guess I'm just lucky as I know people who haven't.

the last time I got out of it due to work needing me there more than my sense of public duty would allow. I felt someone else deserved to be summoned.

The time before I didn't serve on any trials, just had to show up and go through the selection process.

Before that when I was summoned a couple of different times I did serve on some short trials, nothing exciting.

Congrats for your PITA service to your community and the rule of law.

I wouldn't want you from either side, but you never know.

they don't have jury trials. They just take ya out in the field and shoot ya. ;)

Criminal? Ha! NEVAH! Nurses are in the same boat as lawyers for those!

21. I do kinda hope I get

just a one-day trial. I haven't been involved in one of those for a while!

My boss joked that I better not get an OJ-type trial, cuz they only pay for 10 days of jury duty. ;)

I suppose there's also a decent chance that I won't even have to go...or is that pretty much a given?

It just depends on how many cases go to trial, how many jurors are around.........

17. I've been called 3 times

since last April. Twice for county, once for municipal. At least with the county you can check online or by phone the evening before to see if your panel still has to show up. Muni doesn't do their docket ahead of time, so don't know how many cases they'll have. County has a better waiting area. Muni has the teevee tuned to Faux snooze.

22. I've gotten two now in the last two years

Neither time did I goto court, but you still have to plan for it for a few weeks. So I think it sucks, and I wonder if it is politically motivated. As I wrote to them the 2nd time, there are 70,000 people in this county. It does not seem random if I keep getting called every year. It seems more like harrassment.

25. I had federal jury duty Monday afternoon.

I've had to sitt in the jury pool in Superior Court a few times.
Lots of reading time.
The county courthouse here in Tucson is a busy place hundreds of
people working in many accessible.
areas, Many people going in and out, up elevators, down elvators.
A veritable beehive of activity.
The new (four years old) Federal Court Building was a stark contrast.
The only people I saw were the securitry guards, two jury pool handlers,
sixty potential jurors and the court room people.
The lack of activity made it seem as if this was the only thing
happening in the whole building.
The trial was for a man accused of possesion with intent to distribute
150 kilos of marijuana.
I suspect I was ultimately culled because of my son's criminal
history that came up in the questioning of jurors.

All in all, it was an interesting four hours.
