Help! Save me from my inept-ness !

so, got the kiddies a new desktop computer. The old one has the "program" for receiving my wireless connection through the modem that connects us to the cable high speed connection. As I recall, the instructions commanded that I install the receiving end of the wireless connection before I installed the wireless card into my laptop. The ordeal crashed my laptop and I had to take it to a "professional" who charged me $300 to fix it. Evidently the Linksys wireless card was a dudd and he installed an Actiontech (brand). It has been a very sweet connection.

Logic screams at me that I must uninstall all this crud and start the process again. What do you guys think? The kids are SO ready, but I am fearful.
