Poll question: What playground sport should have a professional league?
I'm sure there probably are professional leagues already, but let's just speculate.

15. Basically a modified dodgeball.
Hit somebody with the ball, they're out--catch it, the thrower's out. Play until only one remained.

None of the scratching, grabbing, tackling and gouging I imagine Kill The Man With The Ball offered, I imagine.

66. AKA, Smear The Queer....probably it's best known name.
I always knew it as Murder Ball. Much easier to say.

There's a full wikipedia entry on the game with the RULES (I never new there were rules) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_Ball

Kill The Man With The Ball, Murder The Man With The Ball, Murder Ball, Death Ball, Mugby, and...most famously...Smear The Queer. One game, many names, countless broken bones. It's now a game for those faint of heart or weak of femur.

79. Rugby is a team game.
While two or three people may occasionally team up in Murder Ball, it's essentially a "1 vs. everyone" game. Rather than a team getting points, everyone has their own score.

18. I have fond memories of playing a RR variant called "Bulldog"...
It's sort of an inverse tackle Red Rover.

One unlucky soul was chosen to face a charge of the masses.

The GLORY! The HONOR! The PAIN!

The appointee's duty was to tackle members of the onrushing herd
before they could make it past a safety line some yards behind the
appointee's position in a given amount of time.

The tackled players then had to play on the appointee's team to bring
down other members of the herd.

To be the appointee facing a stampede of crazed and motivated middle
schoolers is to touch the face of Gawd!

There was quite a many work day . . that four square would start at 3 . . . and wouldn't end until I got off work at seven . . .

61. Winneconne--Winnebago County
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 01:10 PM by mycritters2
I had to teach kids how to play it, and we had to draw the squares on the blacktop with chalk. In Davenport, they were painted on--on the school playground, at the public park. Our church even added a blacktopped area with foursquares when they expanded the parking lot.

So, I tried to export it to Winneconne, but it never caught on to the extent that it was a veritable lifestyle in Iowa.
