Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 05:59 PM by JVS
If I open a jar of mushrooms, how long can it remain in the fridge before it dangerous to eat them?

1. Your first mistake is buying mushrooms in a jar.
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 05:57 PM by Rabrrrrrr
:puke:

Buy fresh. Only fresh. Or dried.

I can't answer your question, though, since it depends on what the mushrooms are packed in, the temperature of the frige, and whether the liquid is covering up the mushrooms, and how wide the jar opening is (that is, how much air is flowing and how much surface area is exposed to the air).

But why not just close the jar? Or did you lose the lid? I never put liquids in the fridge without a cover, partly so it doesn't get the smell of other foods or smell them up, but mostly to protect myself from a spill.

I'd seal them up in tupperware.

2. I'm using them for hamburger topping. No need for fancy mushrooms
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 05:59 PM by JVS
And I do close the lid. I just want to know how long they are safe to eat. I've heard legends of food poisoning.

3. So are you using day's old hamburger and cooking til it's liquid free?
If the mushrooms don't matter, then clearly nothing else matters - might as well as crappy beef, too.

:P

Seriously, though - the taste difference, even on a burger, is HUGE (HIUGH!!!!!11!!), between fresh mushrooms and canned mushrooms.

5. Sorry!
If you can keep them covered with liquid AND with a top, they'll keep for a week at least. Probably much longer, but I don't really know.

11. You should have bought canned.
They are sold in 4 ounce cans. That way if you only plan on using them once, at least you won't be stuck with alot.

24. Actually, I did buy canned. The jar is left over from a previous batch
I put the ones that I didn't use from the can into the jar.

This thread COULD go down in the Lounge Annals.
Right along with Olive Garden, Corn Flake Encrusted Fried Chicken, and Public Breastfeeding.

We need to work it though.
The bar is set pretty high.
Come on!
I KNOW you can do it!

I am already

22. Clearly you know as much about mushrooms as you do being a human being.
Which is to say - abso-fucking-lutely nothing.

:eyes:

What - did you go to a community college?

:eyes:

Americans waste so much food because they worry constantly about bacteria and germs. That's why kids are so goddamned soft nowadays - we cover 'em in antibiotics, and never give their bodies a chance to develop its own immunities.

If you're gonna say "three days", you might just as well say "Hitler had the right idea, he was just an underachiever".

I'm sorry, but I thought this was a liberal board.

Then it's trash. But dude, fresh isn't expensive. There are about three good-sized mushrooms in one can... maybe ten in a jar. Get the fresh ones.

on edit: "fesh" geez
