1. My husband and I were stuck in an ice storm once.
It's much, much worse than snow. There were cars sliding in all directions. One goober in a Hummer avoided the line of traffic by zooming up the shoulder. I prayed to any dieties that would listed to please help us get home safely.

Anyone in the path of this ice storm, please keep yourselves safe!

2. Thank you!
Usually assholes in Hummers deserve whatever nasty things come their way.

3. My sister is in Tulsa
The boys should all be home this afternoon. She's got all the supplies you're supposed to have on hand. I hope for all of you the power holds.

Be safe.

4. Had a terrible one here about 15 years ago
We're STILL talking about it. MUCH worse than a snowstorm--and we have plenty of those for comparison (well, we used to before the weather went all freaky on us). Yanks down power lines so streets are closed because the live wires are lying there on the pavement. Lost thousands of trees (the one in our front yard split down the middle--sounded like a gunshot). Can't drive on the stuff AT ALL. And some folks were without power for more than two weeks.

Hang tight, Duckie! Hope it never happens--may the meteorologists be wrong this time, when it counts!

5. Our last bad one was 5 years ago...
And they're still talking about it. My mom was without power for nearly a month. She lived at her liquor store for most of it because my uncle who lives in the same town couldn't be bothered. Bastard. If he does it again, I'm going to go postal. Sorry you lost your tree. Thanks!

6. My parishioners are worrying about it. Want to cancel a meeting for tonight
I never cancel anything until the precipitation actually starts to fall. But I also tell people that if they feel unsafe, they should make the choice to stay home, and I'll respect that.

They just issued a freezing rain advisory, and it's raining now. Not freezing yet, but I'm considering canceling the book study for tonight.

17. Thanks!
I attended funerals for two colleagues this past week--one a United Methodist but really into the holiness movement; the other UU. The UMC guy's funeral was preached by a Lutheran (but not like any Lutheran I've ever heard preach before--pastor of this church: www.foxriverlutheran.org). It was bizarre, with tangents about how hard a life pastors have (I love my work!), and how Muslims and Buddhists are going to hell, and, of course, so are liberal Christians, and on and on.

The UU funeral was MUCH better in lots of ways; a really lovely, heartfelt time of remembering and celebrating a life. But God was presented as sort of nebulous and impersonal.

I came away from the two experiences realizing that I am where I should be, that I am fortunate and proud of my tradition.

Tomorrow I meet with two women to plan their wedding. Much good to be said about the UCC.

Hey-you stay safe, too!

20. I love Christians like yourself...
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 04:17 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
People who don't think God is impersonal and vengeful. I converted to Catholicism a few years back, but I haven't been back to church in a while. I honestly love the Catholic tradition, but I've seen nothing good out of the Christian Community lately, and I rarely see God in anything anymore. It's very sad. Oh, look, I've high-jacked my own thread. LMAO. Honestly, you give me hope.

7. Stay safe, and I hope the power stays on
The Pacific Northwest as a whole sends its sympathies. I can't tell you how many good thoughts I'm sending that your power stays on. I also hope that the weather forecaster is wrong, wrong, WRONG.

We had an ice storm five years ago. I will never forget the sound of trees exploding all around us.

Thinking of you,
Julie

18. Is your Mom from Weatherford?
I saw a red car with a yellow rubber duckie on the back of it (Wednesday maybe) and I thought of the DU'er with that name. Here's a picture I just took here in Corn.

19. It is 30 degrees here now. And we have a freezing fog.
We have a chance of freezing rain through Sunday, but also they are saying snow too. I am at work. Had to come to work. But if it is bad enough Monday I am not coming in.

21. We are having an ice storm here in KC as well.
I decided to "work" from home today and planned to get up early and get to the grocery store and post office (my bad ass red suede adidas arrived). Anyway, I got out the door about 8:20 and the roads were already slick. I went back out about 2pm because I forgot a couple of critical ingredients and I hit the Blockbuster.

So, now I'm home with a stack of wood, food for chicken fajitas and bison chili, plenty of hot tea and oatmeal, lots of wine, a couple of movies, and my new shoes that I ordered from Germany that I have been waiting on for weeks.

I'm set!

23. sometimes it's fun to be stuck at home
but moreso if the power is on or if you have a fireplace!

I hate ice storms and usually refuse to drive. There's nothing as scary as sliding and having no control over the car. Fortunately all my sliding was done into ditches, or when no other cars were near. Stay safe, everyone.

It's warm here (in PA) again, I wonder if we really will have much of a winter.

25. We're going to get it here too, in N. Texas...
...it dropped 20 degrees in one hour!! They say we will have freezing rain, starting by tomorrow...lasting until 6pm on Sunday night. This is not how I wanted to spend my days off...especially after working so hard all week. Oh well, Texas needs all the rain it can get, I guess.

Stay warm, Duckie!
