Are the movies this coming summer all sequels?
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 02:17 PM by NewJeffCT
Spider-Man 3
Shrek 3
Pirates of the Caribbean 3
Harry Potter 5

Did I miss the new law being passed that required summer movies to be at least the third movie of a series?

Granted, they should all take in at least $200 million... but, is anything "big" scheduled for this summer that is not a sequel?

Forgot to add - isn't Fantastic Four 2 coming out as well?

1. Hey, it's Transformers 1.
It just happens to be a remake of a cartoon movie. Based on a cartoon series. For marketing a toy. Also, there was a comic book.

4. At least it's the first one (of a series)
I was never big into Transformers, even though I should have been...

2. I liked Shrek, felt lukewarm about Shrek 2...
hasn't it just about worn out its welcome?

3. I liked Shrek 2
Of course, I watched it about 3000 times with my daughter, who will be 4 next month.

7. Man, they got Silver Surfer in the new one...
go to imbd.com, and watch the trailer....if Silver is in it, that means...Galactus, is not to far behind....:D

I'm also excited about Ghostrider, but its not a summer movie. I think Alien Vs. Predator II comes out this year...

12. Could be interesting
I wonder how they would do a practically omnipotent being like Galactus. I hope they wouldn't cheapen him at all.

14. I'm hoping they'll handle Galactus the way Ultimate Marvel did.
Audiences might be more inclined to swallow that one.

15. I haven't bought a new comic book since 1991 or so
I have no idea what "Ultimate Marvel" did with Galactus... may I ask what (spoilers are okay)

I quit comic books cold turkey in '91 because my habit was getting to be a few hundred dollars per month, and I found myself needing a new car at the time and the car payments won out of over comics.

16. Ultimate Marvel's sort of a relaunch for folks who don't want to deal with 40 years of backstory.

:hi: That includes me.

Essentially a modernized reboot of Spidey, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers (now called the Ultimates, which was a bad move.) They've some variations in character design/stories, so it's not just a carbon copy of regular marvel. Some of these were good ideas, some were really bad ideas.

Anyway, Ultimate Galactus was an advanced AI (to the point of very primitive sentience) construct-thousands of linked robots that looked like regular Galactus' helmet. In a swarm the size of Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Rather than literally consuming a planet, they'd kill everything on it with a flesh-eating virus, then strip it for resources.

They also did something with the Silver Surfers (smaller numbers of them, acting to soften up planets before Galactus arrives) that I liked a lot.

And here's a small cover that shows the robots.

9. The remake of "The Hitcher" comes out soon - with Boromir
playing the Rutger Hauer role. (That's Sean Bean...)

That's one role that anybody will have trouble following in a remake (what's next - a new version of Patton?)

10. I saw some previews the other day...
Other than the actors the script seems to be a carbon copy right down to the action scenes.

I won't be seeing that one. Probably, not even on DVD.

13. cross-marketed formulaic entertainment product
stick with what generates the largest revenue streams.

what we don't make in box office, we can get on the backend in dvd and licensing.

we are constantly being sold to. the last "golden age" of hollywood died quietly many moons ago.

17. Spiderman 3, if the same production team makes it, will likely be spectacular
The rest seem ho-hum... apart from harry Potter, which is to be expected.
