Saw "Children of Men" yesterday .....

for my 2 cents worth - I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know if I didn't care for it because I haven't read the book. The character development was non-existent. Dialog was corny. As for the camera work that I've been reading about - it really didn't impress me. In fact, in one scene there remained droplets of blood on the lens which (to me) made me fully conscious that I was watching something being 'filmed' rather than settling into the drama of the moment. I know I'll catch hell for this, but, there you have it.

1. I just saw it - it's unrelentingly grim

I suppose the ending is supposed to be hopeful, but after a couple of hours of sheer unadulterated nastiness, (apart from Jasper - the Michael Caine character), I didn't care any more.

2. I just read the book

Started it yesterday and finished it this afternoon. I loved it. I am a huge fan of P.D. James. I just love her prose. I wish there had been a bit more development of the characters, but I think she wrote the book when she was in her 70's. I highly recommend the book for a weekend read. It reminded me of The Handmaiden's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
