My grandmother's gravestone: "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet"
No, that's not what we're putting on. I was hoping that her last married name wouldn't be on the stone. One family member has suggested we put it on if only for identification purposes. I guess that's a good idea.

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet"

1. The epitaph is what will count I suppose
Ages hence, no one will know the name, but they will recognize the sentiment. I love to visit old graveyards and some of the epitaphs I've read bring tears to my eyes..and I never even knew the person.

It time, the name will be just that, a name. Forever you'll have your memories though and that weighs so much more than the stone ever could. A good weight to carry in your heart, never a burden.

on edit. This made sense to 'me' when I typed it, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. :loveya:

3. hmm... what do you (Kesha & everyone) think of this idea

Maybe her memory should be honored by remembering exactly who she was as well as by our own memories of her.

Ps 119, 76 “May your unfailing love be my comfort” and Psalm 31, 24 “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.”

Those bits tell who Grandma was. Her hope in God's promises, and the comfort she drew from him, were her very core.

I wrote my dad that maybe one of those could be her epitaph. But, I told him, as long as something is on there about how deeply beloved she was of "us girls" (her granddaughters), I'm fine with whatever he has put on there.

thanks, K :loveya: I do understand. I am beginning to be able to think about her without crying. But not right now.

4. Ps 119:76 has always touched me ..
31:24 is most appropriate .. I'm trying hard to hold back tears as I read them. We only have a bronze plate that marks my mother's place in a columbarium where I placed her ashes urn. How I wish I'd tought of one of those Psalms for her.

Maybe I can have it redone.

tears cleanse the soul and sparkle in the light of love y'know.

6. It took a question from my uncle to make me think about WHY I don't want . . .
. . . his - her last husband's - name on her stone. He asked why. I wrote all:

"Kenny was not good to her. He was mean & nasty, evil and hurtful. The nicest I ever saw him act towards her was when he said nothing for hours or days on end. I hope she had well purged her memory of him long before she lost her self-awareness."
