Is anyone having trouble with Gmail?
I can't get any results, just a blank screen all morning/afternoon.

4. Tell me about Gmail, please?
Why is it you have to be 'invited'?
Or so I've heard.

5. Because It's technically still in Beta, although it's been that way...
...for 3 years now. If you want an invite, I have 91 to give away. PM me your e-mail address if you want one. I love it!

6. Think there is a way to get on without invite if you can text message on cell phone
How about I check and report back?

Don't know why google has it arranged so. Perhaps to avoid dealing with a lot of people who really don't do much with tech?

I do like the other cool stuff offered to gmail users. Lots of fun 'toys' and access to some beta stuff.

7. Here is what they answer about the question you posed
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?ctx=mobile&answer=22245&hl=en

Can I sign up without the invitation code? Or without a mobile phone?

You need to receive and enter a special invitation code in order to create an account. Currently, we are only sending these codes as text messages to mobile phones. So you will need to have a mobile phone with text message capabilities (most phones have this) and the invitation code itself.

One of the reasons we are offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse. Spam and abuse protection are two things we take very seriously, and our users have been very happy with the small amount of spam they've received in their Gmail accounts. We take many measures to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending their spam messages, getting these messages delivered, or even obtaining a Gmail account (spammers will often use many different accounts to send spam). Sending invitation codes to mobile phones via SMS is one way to address this, as the number of accounts per phone number can be limited.

If you want to open an account a different way, you may want to ask a friend with a mobile phone to receive an invitation code for you or to ask someone you know who already has a Gmail account to email you an invitation.

Got to thinkin- they prolly want only people who like to buy gadgets as they can use that in some marketting ploy to companies somehow. I have an account for casual internet pal correspondence. Seems safer than giving the email I use extensively to people I really don't know. Many people use it for online forms that require an email address so your REAL email doesn't get buried in spam.

If you want one, ask someone you feel safe giving your email address to that also has gmail to send an invite.

Oh, and check your DU PMs ;)

Thanks.
Makes sense.
I am inundated with spam.
I just got an invite so I'll check into it.

9. Got your PM and thank you.
I've saved it and I may take you up.
Just got my first laptop and I'm looking at new and better ways to 'compute'.
Starting with a clean machine and I want to keep it as 'outside interference' free as possible.
I saved your PM and will get back to you.
Many thanks.
:-)
DU is SO good.
