Sleet vs. Freezing Rain:
Edited on Sat Jan-13-07 11:43 PM by KC2
Freezing Rain:

Rain that falls in liquid form and then freezes upon impact with the ground or an item with a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or less, possibly producing a thin coating of ice. Even in small amounts, freezing rain can cause traveling problems. Large amounts can pull down power lines and tree branches.

Sleet:

Sleet is less prevalent than freezing rain and is defined as frozen raindrops that bounce on impact with the ground or other objects.

4. I always get these two mixed up...
...you'd think I could keep them straight...especially since my father is a Meteorologist! But, I always think freezing rain is frozen rain...instead of freezing upon contact! :crazy:

5. I'm fine...thanks!
We went out to run some errands...and took some pics (I'll share..maybe tomorrow). So far, it hasn't been too bad. Tomorrow, though, will probably be another story.

Now...I'm glad *you* are okay...and everybody in the pacific! That tsunami warning left me feeling uneasy last night...and just before I went to bed. I woke up with my jaw clinched! No dreams that I could remember. :-( Oh well...I'm sure that was because of the meds I took.

6. Yes
So, how are things up there? Did you hear we are also expecting 10 inches of rain by Monday? My husband wanted to cancel our flood insurance this year because the last 2 years were droughts, but I jokingly said, "Don't you know a flood always follows a drought?" So, he renewed it. It's always a good idea to have flood insurance when you live near water, like we do!

10. Yes, I've Been Thinking I Need Flood Insurance
even though the Arkansas river would have to rise a lot to get me. The city has problems with the sewers and they have backed up into people's houses and flood insurance is the only thing that will pay for it because the city has gotten out of it somehow even though it is their fault.

We are getting a good amount of rain, and it is raining hard, under a flood warning/watch, but really that won't affect me. Even when the Arkansas has flooded, it isn't anywhere near me.

I'm concerned about the ice that may be moving in. It is supposed to dip just down far enough to freeze above ground structures like bridges, trees, and power lines. I hate that kind of thing.

..right? If you are concerned about spring flooding, you might want to purchase it soon. :hug:

14. I Really Haven't Been Concerned
I just heard about a family that had their sewer back up and had to move out for a month and they had no flood insurance.

We passed a millage increase recently to "fix" the problem. So I'm hoping that will do it. I may look in to it (flood insurance) but I'm really in no flood plain, and at practically 0 risk for flooding unless we had so much water that it probably wouldn't matter anyway (like Noah proportions)

8. Sleet is way better. And I'm in KC as well.
Holed up with a good fire, good wine, warm cookies and the prospect of bison chili with cornbread muffins tomorrow.

Plus the Jayhawks won in overtime on the road.

Life is good despite the storm.

9. Experienced an ice storm in '92
The freezing rain variety can reek havoc. We had trees and limbs down...our area actually looked like a war zone. And electric was off for some folks..over two weeks.

We have warnings up for freezing rain/sleet/snow combo platter tonight and into tomorrow.

I hope that Oklahoma and other areas that have been hit with this storm are recovering quickly.:scared:

18. No, I'm not tough at all.
This winter has been non-existent (until maybe now) but usually, when the winter is the normal snow and cold -- I get a bit depressed. I hibernate, for the most part, read a lot of books, paint lots of pictures, and play on the computer.

I used to do a little of the outside, winter activities when my kids were small, but now I pretty much hold up inside until its over.

Are you experiencing the ice storm where you are?

19. Yes...it has been only icing trees and bridges so far...
..but tomorrow will be more severe. I'll be stuck indoors most of the day. I'm thinking about digging up my down jacket and going around the neighborhood to take more pics though. But, I'll have to be careful about walking on the stuff!

I wish I could paint, like you, btw. I took several drawing and painting classes when I was younger...I just never had any talent. In fact, one art teacher threw one of my drawings into the trash can and said, "This is where it belongs." I didn't see him do it, but I heard about it from another student. Oh well...at least I found out at an early age, and didn't keep torturing myself! Anyway, this is my long way of saying I envy and admire artists! :hi:

27. Is that your own photo of a ice coated branch?
That's awesome. Ice storms can be incredibly beautiful.

Your art teacher should have been thrown in the trash for saying such a defeatist thing. If you can look through the camera lens and see what you are obviously able to see -- you can surely paint and draw. It is a visual experience -- just as photography is. I teach many beginners. One of my students is a retired teacher and amateur photographer. She had never picked up a paint brush. Her paintings are fabulous! Try it, again -- you may surprise yourself.

My daughter took our only camera off to college. I'm going to be getting myself another. When I get it -- I will share some of my artwork.:hi:

22. We have another round of ice/sleet/snow to get through
most of the day tomorrow. Supposedly the storm will be out of Oklahoma then. The roads are horrible. At least that's what I hear. I haven't been outside for two days, other than to slide out to get the mail and newspaper. Literally. Still have power, thank goodness. A lot of the state doesn't.

20. Wiki has a great entry on precipitation
Precipitation that forms aloft is divided into three categories:

Liquid Precipitation; Freezing Precipitation and Frozen Precipitation.

* Types of Liquid Precipitation:
o Drizzle (DZ)
o Rain (RA)

* Types of Freezing Precipitation:
o Freezing Drizzle (FZDZ)
o Freezing Rain (FZRA)

* Types of Frozen Precipitation:
o Snow (SN)
o Snow pellets (SHGS)
o Snow Grains (SG)
o Ice Pellets (PL)
o Hail (SHGR)
o Ice Crystals (IC)

The code in the brackets is the METAR Code for the phenomena.
