A very large maple tree in my yard just cracked down the middle.

It separates my yard from my neighbors. Depending on which section falls first it will take out our bedroom, and the porch roof, maybe part of the kitchen. If a section falls on neighbors, it will hit their deck and maybe kitchen. We have calls in to a tree guy and the DPW. We are praying someone comes before we have a real mess. But, there are trees and power lines down everywhere and it is an icy mess outside. We have lost power twice today. Yuck. Winter has finally come to upstate New York.

They had a tree do something similar. I hope you can get someone out to get it down before it does any damage. :(

2. that is a nightmare...

here it is rainy and so soggy that I am expecting floods in the low areas and landslides in the others...it is just so miserable and they are saying it will rain all week long....gag...

3. We had to take down a large pine tree which was "V-shaped" right down

almost too its base. I was afraid it would fall on some car or kid (or both!) out on the street where our house was located.

That tree had huge colonies of carpenter ants living in it, and the middle was already gouged out. The work cost over $1,000, but it was good weather and we didn't have trouble finding a tree surgeon to do the work.

We had lots of firewood for a season, which was the good news.

I had a little ditty that I sang about our tree, which was some black humor:

"I think that I shall never see
A PAID BILL lovely as that tree..."

Sorry for your problem. Hope you get it taken down soon.

4. RedWitch, my good vibes go out to you. Trees are beautiful, but so dangerous.

We live in a subdivision built in 1998 where there are just small trees.

However, we have an existing stand of 30 or so Douglas firs soaring up 60 -- 80 feet behind our house. The city owns the property and is supposed to take care of them, but in recent storms, they really rocked and rolled. I slept downstairs (whatever good that did) the night we had 40+ mph storms.

5. A neighbors tree on the other side is the one we always worried about.

That is poised to take out our carriage barn. Except it appears to be just fine. The maple tree that is split today showed no sign of disease. Ah well. The yard won't be the same without it. :-( However, if someone doesn't remove it quick, my house won't be the same! Thanks for your concern RL!
