Post a really cool, non-mainstream love song
This is a Dire Straights song called "Romeo and Juliet" that the Indigo Girls covered, and Amy Ray tears it UP. It's always been my favorite love song every since I first heard it.

I just found it on youtube and it's a fan vid, and I don't know who the characters are in it but the song is awesome:

Indigo Girls - Romeo and Juliet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJZjLUIT1dk

I'd like to hear some more love songs like this that are by indie or not well-known groups/singers that aren't sappy. Post 'em if you got em.

1. Dunno if this one did anything in America
but it was a hit in the UK, although a bit off the wall. Blur are like that.

To The End:

I had to let it buffer a little first. Shit mirror for me.

Blur's first album was around 1990. They are still going now, I think. I think they rule. This song is from their third album "Parklife", circa 1994.

15. "Bangs" by They Might Be Giants, "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds and
"Everyday Clothes" by Jonathan Richman are some of my favorites.

From "Bangs":
"...And although I like you anyway, check out your haircut
A proscenium to stage a face that needs no makeup..."

And from "Everyday Clothes":
"...She had a black dress that I remember still
But in her ordinary clothes she was dressed to kill
I loved her
I loved her
At first sight I suppose
But I couldn’t have loved her more than in her plain old everyday clothes..."

And of course, "The Luckiest":
I don't get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here

And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

What if I'd been born fifty years before you
In a house on a street where you lived?
Maybe I'd be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?

And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you

Next door there's an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

16. many, many Robyn Hitchcock songs
Edited on Mon Jan-15-07 05:02 PM by tigereye
Flesh #1 from Globe of Frogs, for example

There's a house burning down on the radio, but
We're in love, we don't mind, we're as far as I can tell
Everyone worries so much about themselves
There's nothing happening to you that means anything at all

and Rhett Miller (previously with the Old 97s)has a lot of non MS love songs...

Four-Eyed Girl
by Rhett Miller
album: The Instigator (2002)
Two of us in a double-feature
I'm a rock and roller she's a science teacher
I send her looks they don't reach her
She does not know I'm in love with her
Later on it's no better
She wants to take a walk so I let her
I watch her go and then I go and get her
I have to spell it out for her
La-la-la I'm in love with a four-eyed girl
She knows how to move me now she knows how
Twenty-four hours Katz's never closes
Yeah I tell her that I love her and I don't care who knows it
What's it take romance red wine roses
She gets the picture takes pity on me
She lets go she lets it happen
It's a hot spell after a cold snap
My eyes are open nobody's napping she says
You don't want to miss a minute of me
La-la-la I'm in love with a four-eyed girl
She knows how to move me now she knows how
La-la-la I'm in love with a four-eyed girl
She knows how to move me now she knows how

22. Stand Inside Your Love- Smashing Pumpkins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uye9axJgndk

You and me
Meant to be
Immutable
Impossible
It's destiny
Pure lunacy
Incalculable
Inseparable

But for the last time
You're everything
That I want and ask for
You're all that I dreamed
Who wouldn't be the one you love
Who wouldn't stand inside your love
Protected and the lover of

A pure soul and beautiful you
Don't understand
Don't feel me now
I will breathe
For the both of us
Travel the world
Traverse the skies
Your home is here
Within my heart

And for the first time
I feel as though I am reborn
In my mind
Recast as child and mystic sage
Who wouldn't be the one you love
Who wouldn't stand inside your love

And for the first time
I'm telling you how much
I need and bleed for
Your every move and waking sound
In my time
I'll wrap wire around your heart
And your mind
You're mine forever now
Who wouldn't be the one you love
And live for
Who wouldn't stand inside your love
And die for

Who wouldn't stand inside your love

31. One More: "Oh Valencia- The Decemberists
O Valencia! - Decemberists

Genre/Lang. : Pop/Rock

You belong to the gang
And you say you can’t break away
But I’m here with my hands on my heart

Our families can’t agree
I’m your brother’s sworn enemy
But I’ll shout out my love to the stars

So wait for the stone on your window, your window
Wait by the car and we’ll go, we’ll go

When first we laid eyes
I swore to no compromise
‘Til I felt my caress on your skin

Well, how soon we were betrayed
Your sister gave us away
And your father came all unhinged

So wait for the stone on your window, your window
Wait by the car and we’ll go, we’ll go

Oh Valencia
With your blood still warm on the ground
Valencia
And I swear to the stars
I’ll burn this whole city down

All I heard was a shout
Of your brother calling me out
And you ran like a fool to my side

Well the shot, it hit hard
And your frame went limp in my arms
And an oath of love was your dying cry

So wait for the stone on your window, your window
Wait by the car and we’ll, go we’ll go

Oh Valencia
With your blood still warm on the ground
Valencia
And I’ll burn this whole city down
Valencia
With your blood getting cold on the ground
Valencia
And I swear to the stars
I’ll burn this whole city down

by a group called London After Midnight. Lyrics below. :)

Empty hearts, I can hear them talking
I close my eyes and keep on stalking my love, my love
No one's aware of the hunger I feel
It's something you and time cannot heal
I need someone to help me rise above

Eternal bliss is something I can show you
Spread your arms and let my wings enfold you my love, my love
In the darkness, shades of crimson rapture
The world is ours alone to capture, my love, my love

Come over here and let me tell you something
Nothing ever comes of nothing
We pay a price for all our choices made
Come along now and take my hand
I'll lead you to a promised land
The morning after may never come again
Never be the same...

51. Dunno if this is "non-mainstream" but I love Jackie by Sinead O'Connor
Jackie left on a cold dark night
Telling me he'd be home
Sailed the seas for a hundred years
Leaving me all alone

And I've been dead for twenty years,
I've been washing the sand with my ghostly tears
Searching the shores for my Jackie, oh

I remember the day the young man came
He said "Your Jackie's gone, he got lost in the rain"
And I ran to the beach and laid me down.
"You're all wrong," I said and they stared at the sand,
"That man know that sea like the back of his hand,
He'll be back some time laughing at you"

And I've been waiting all this time,
For my man to come take his hand in mine
And lead me away to unseen shores

I've been washing the sand with my salty tears
Searching the shores these long years
And I'll walk the sea forever more

Till I find my Jackie, oh

(killer live version):

Perfect Day by Harry Nilsson.
Available on BMG, PERSONAL BEST: The Harry Nilsson Anthology.
A very weird, legato, strange and beautiful song. Harry was great at those LOOOOOOOONG notes. Strange and beautiful like Harry himself.

It's a perfect way
to end a perfect day

It's the perfect way
to end a perfect day

Ride with me
Glide with me
Stay by my side with me
All through the night

Ride on the wings
Of the Angels of Love
Who are on our side

It's the perfect way
to end a perfect day

It's the perfect way
to say
I
Love
You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79T96_WFKRM

Because Of | Words and music by Leonard Cohen

Because of a few songs
Wherein I spoke of their mystery,
Women have been
Exceptionally kind
to my old age.
They make a secret place
In their busy lives
And they take me there.
They become naked
In their different ways
and they say,
"Look at me, Leonard
Look at me one last time."
Then they bend over the bed
And cover me up
Like a baby that is shivering.

58. Distantly in Love

by Jimmy Buffett will always be one of the great overlooked love songs of our time, IMHO...

Distantly In Love
By: Jimmy Buffett
1983
For Jane and Savannah Jane

Payphones all were ringing as the crowd went roarin' by
Lovely dancers swayin' to an island lullaby
Beside the southern ocean taking stock of what's to be
Writing you this letter that you'll probably never see

Chorus:
But I can't help but be
Ruled by inconsistencies
Not unique just distantly in love

Tried to phone from Paris thinking things could be arranged
Me and you would rendezvous but I found your number changed
So I drove to San Remo where the crazy painter dwells
Toasted our old photograph still up there on his shelf

Chorus:
But I can't help but be
Ruled by my antiquities
Not unique just distantly in love

I can't be the one to fill
Your times and all your places
I can't be the one to fill
Your blanks and empty spaces

I heard it from a friend of ours I saw in Kimba Bay
You had a new lover who had stolen you away
That could be the reason that I never got in touch
May present slight problems if he loves you half as much

Chorus:
As I who can't help but be
Ruled by my antiquities
Not unique just distantly in love
You know I can't help but be
Part of my own philosophies
Not unique just distantly in love
