Post songs that make you feel nostalgic and sad (or nostalgic and happy)...
I don't know why but I've been looking through photo albums all evening and now I cannot get this song out of my head:

A Long December - Counting Crows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISae5t98V38

A long december and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leaving
Now the days go by so fast
And its one more day up in the canyons
And its one more night in hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven...i wish you would
The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl
And its one more day up in the canyons
And its one more night in hollywood
If you think you might come to california...i think you should
Drove up to hillside manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her
And its been a long december and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I cant remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass
And its one more day up in the canyon
And its one more night in hollywood
Its been so long since Ive seen the ocean...i guess I should

I love songs like this, if anyone knows anymore like this post 'em

1. Everybody Hurts - REM
Edited on Mon Jan-15-07 10:08 PM by ChoralScholar
Not only is the song pretty emotive, I used it in a very emotional play I directed about a school shooting. So, when I hear it, I remember seeing my own students express those emotions in front of their classmates.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2vyYHFO7jg

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

3. good one
justa about everything by REM makes me feel nostalgic at this point. There heyday was a very special time in my life.

Here's one that gets me:

Don't go back to Rockville - REM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcfYFivot3Y

Looking at your watch a third time waiting in the station for the bus
Going to a place that's far, so far away and if that's not enough
Going where nobody says hello, they don't talk to anybody they don't know
You'll wind up in some factory that's full time filth and nowhere left to go
Walk home to an empty house, sit around all by yourself
I know it might sound strange, but I believe
You'll be coming back before too long

Don't go back to Rockville, don't go back to Rockville, don't go back to Rockville
And waste another year

At night I drink myself to sleep and pretend
I don't care if you're not here with me
'Cause it's so much easier to handle
All my problems if I'm too far out to sea
But something better happen soon
Or it's gonna be too late to bring you back

It's not as though I really need you
If you were here I'd only bleed you
But everybody else in town only wants to bring you down and
That's not how it ought to be
Well I know it might sound strange, but I believe
You'll be coming back before too long

2. All Apologies
especially the Unplugged version.

Maybe the Nirvana haters will laugh, but Nirvana always makes me feel nostalgic, especially this song and Come As You Are. I was a sophomore in high school when I first heard Nirvana and me and my group of angsty pothead friends fell in love, and I stayed there. :)

4. It does me too
Edited on Mon Jan-15-07 10:17 PM by idgiehkt
Most of that Unplugged concert made me feel nostaligic as soon as I heard it, even though it was still new then, lol

video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cinyU1btME

This song makes me feel nostalgic for mood altering chemicals, worse than any song I've ever heard and I can't always listen to it because of that:

Nirvana - Plateau, from Unplugged
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAppKOT-3NA

edit: I think "what are they tuning, a harp?" is one of the best quips I've ever heard by a musician at a concert, lol.

Nirvana - Plateau Lyrics
Many a hand has scaled the grand old face of the plateau
Some belong to strangers and some to folks you know
Holy ghosts and talk show hosts are planted in the sand
To beautify the foothills and shake the many hands

There's nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs action when you got words?

When you've finished with the mop then you can stop
And look at what you've done
The plateau's clean, no dirt to be seen
And the work it was fun

There's nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs action when you got words

Well the many hands began to scan around for the next plateau
Some said it was in Greenland and some say Mexico
Others decided it was nowhere except for where they stood
But those were all just guesses, wouldn't help you if they could

6. Thanks for the link
I did like Plateau and the rest of the covers they did, too. That whole album is a masterpiece, IMO. I'm so glad they did it and that it was released.

Old rumor is that Kurt was going to quit Nirvana and had discussed working with Michael Stipe (with Stipe). Can you imagine what might have resulted from THAT collaboration? Nothing like nostalgia AND wishful thinking at once. ;)

16. well, I've heard they made out
with Courtney's knowledge, that is. That was a quote from Courtney, can't remember from where or when though.

Kurt wasn't happy. Such a shame.

5. for personal reasons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsezr0qiFIc

Hello, its me
Ive thought about us for a long, long time
Maybe I think too much but somethings wrong
Theres something here that doesnt last too long
Maybe I shouldnt think of you as mine

Seeing you
Or seeing anything as much as I do you
I take for granted that youre always there
I take for granted that you just dont care
Sometimes I cant help seeing all the way through

Its important to me that you know you are free
cause I never want to make you change for me

Think of me
You know that Id be with you if I could
Ill come around to see you once in a while
Or if I ever need a reason to smile
And spend the night if you think I should

and this one (again for personal reasons)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIA4gcrk-50

I've been drivin' all night, my hand's wet on the wheel
There's a voice in my head that drives my heel
It's my baby callin', says I need you here
And it's a half past four and I'm shiftin' gear
When she is lonely and the longing gets too much
She sends a cable comin' in from above
Don't need no phone at all
We've got a thing that's called Radar Love
We've got a wave in the air, Radar Love
The radio is playing some forgotten song
Brenda Lee's comin' on strong
The road has got me hypnotized
And I'm speedin' into a new sunrise
When I get lonely and I'm sure I've had enough
She sents her comfort comin' in from above
We don't need no letter at all
We've got a thing that's called Radar Love
We've got a light in the sky
(Instrumental break)
No more speed, I'm almost there
Gotta keep cool now, gotta take care
Last car to pass, here I go
And the line of cars drove down real slow
And the radio played that forgotten song
Brenda Lee's comin' on strong
And the newsman sang his same song
Oh one more radar lover gone
When I get lonely and I'm sure I've had enough
She sents her comfort comin' in from above
We don't need no letter at all
We've got a thing that's called Radar Love
We've got a light in the sky
We've got a thing that's called Radar Love
We've got a thing that's called Radar Love

pretty much anything that came out in 73, 74 and 75 is hard for me to listen too bitter sweet, double edged sword....

for many years i could NOT listen to songs from those years but, time has worked its magic and i am learning to enjoy them again as music and NOT for the memories they conjure:hi:

7. Tori Amos: Winter
Edited on Mon Jan-15-07 10:26 PM by LibraLiz1973
It reminds me of my dad. I get a little teary eyed when I hear it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqauKbARSvc

Snow can wait, I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose, get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart when I think of winter
I put my hand in my fathers glove

I run off where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice you must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I cant always be around

He says when you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that Ill always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and Im here still waiting
Withering where some snowman was

Mirror mirror wheres the crystal palace
But I only can see myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know, dad, the ice is getting thin

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that Ill always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Hair is grey and the fires are burning
So many dreams on the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud
I always wanted that myself

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gona change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that Ill always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Never change

I just love these lines:

"When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do?"

Tori is a great writer.

14. this one for a whole nother set of reason
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIHJu2lIPTk

Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'cross the falling dark

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love

Perfect summers night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dancefloor

We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

17. nostalgic and sort of happy/goofy/defiant feeling
Everclear - Santa Monica
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzIr1_PMvW8

I am still living with your ghost
Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I dont want to be your downtime
I dont want to be your stupid game

With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe Ill find myself a new place
I dont want to be the bad guy
I dont want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
Go and try and shake away this disease

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

I am still dreaming of your face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away

I dont want to be your good time
I dont want to be your fall-back crutch anymore

Ill walk right out into a brand new day
Insane and rising in my own weird way
I dont want to be the bad guy

I dont want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to feel some sunshine
I just want to find some place to be alone

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
