Helps insulate them from the cold without putting too much weight on them.
You might want to call a local garden store and see what they suggest.

It works for them; but they're the native Appalachian variety...accustomed to sudden dips in temperature.

You don't even need to cover them. Bulbs are pretty hardy. If the buds are through, though, you should probably cover them.
