Two things that bug me about 24
Love the show, honestly--I've seen every hour in first-run since the series premiere. I'm one of those rare viewers (well, not really rare on DU, but rare in the country at large, apparently) who recognizes that it's a fictional TV show and not a manifesto for government policy blah blah blah.

I don't mind the strained realism, since no show on TV outside of CSPAN really goes out of its way to be realistic. But two continuing things consistently strike me as inexcusable:

1. Jack Bauer says nukular. I don't care how tough he is or whose ass he most recently kicked; if I worked with him I would summon up my righteous English major fury and stomp him every time he hacked up that mispronunciation.

2. Pretty much every time anyone refers to anyone, the person's full name is used, even if that person was just named a moment before. For example:

Chloe: If anyone can solve this, it's Jack Bauer.
Buchanan: Jack Bauer may be resourceful, but this could be beyond him.
Nadia: I've read Jack Bauer's file, and if he's half the agent that people claim, then we need Jack Bauer to run this operation.
Buchanan: Chloe, get Jack Bauer on the phone.

etc... I've gone whole days without referring to someone by first-and-last name, and even then it's typically because I need to distinguish between two people with the same first name (Missy Jones and Missy Smith, for instance).

Vexing!

1. #2 is funny
But hey, any show that goes Lost Boys on us has to be worth something.

3. Yes indeed!
That was the best reprisal of an earlier role that I've seen in years!

2. I have never seen the show
and that is because it is jammed down my throat constantly during the NFL and MLB games on the damn faux sports network.

4. I never watch NFL and MLB
Because those two ridiculous time-wasters are jammed down the nation's collective throat morning, noon, and night of every day of the year.

Don't feel bad--I know a whole bunch of people who don't watch/can't stand 24.

5. The full-name thing is because
CTU has SO many save-the-world ass-kicking rogue agents (and coincidentally, they're all named Jack) that they have to be specific.

Bill Buchanan: Get Jack on the phone, now!
Nadia: Now would that be Jack Watson, Jack Bauer, or Jack Sanders?

Ya see? In the meantime, two suitcase bombs explode.

6. That's the best explanation I've heard to date
Nicely done!
