Anyone here know anything about String Theory?
For example, if the brane bumps into another brane, what kind of energy would be released?

1. I just know it's proof that physicists do acid.

2. I know...some
What kinds of branes are you talking about?

(I'll also note here that my answer will probably be a little biased just because I think string theory is bunk; and, even if it's not, it's so nebulous and impossible to even grasp that to extract any sort of practical application from it will be, impossible, I think, for mankind for a VERY long time.)

3. The kind of brane that we would be on
I know what I know about String Theory only because of the PBS show "The Elegant Universe" so I can't conclude either way - except that it's interesting as all hell.

8. Read the book
Some of it is......dense......but otherwise it's quite good.

9. I am not equipped to answer that question
And I'm not exactly sure who would be.

I think, however, that existence as we know it would probably cease.

(Btw, for another take on String Theory, check out this article from the New Yorker:
http://www.newyorker.com/printables/critics/061002crat_atlarge

Here's an excerpt: "It is the worst of times in physics. For more than a generation, physicists have been chasing a will-o’-the-wisp called string theory. The beginning of this chase marked the end of what had been three-quarters of a century of progress. Dozens of string-theory conferences have been held, hundreds of new Ph.D.s have been minted, and thousands of papers have been written. Yet, for all this activity, not a single new testable prediction has been made, not a single theoretical puzzle has been solved. In fact, there is no theory so far—just a set of hunches and calculations suggesting that a theory might exist. And, even if it does, this theory will come in such a bewildering number of versions that it will be of no practical use: a Theory of Nothing. Yet the physics establishment promotes string theory with irrational fervor, ruthlessly weeding dissenting physicists from the profession. Meanwhile, physics is stuck in a paradigm doomed to barrenness.")

String Theory is a fascinating idea, but after reading this article, I did some more research and was surprised at how quickly dissent and so forth is stifled amongst the physicists. Thought that only went on in politics...

24. Which makes it more philosophy than science
Empirical science anyway. Come up with a prediction or a falsifiable test and I'll listen.

6. A new universe is created
Or, so one possibility goes. The energy given off would be related to the resulting (eventual) size of the spawned universe, which Galactus would soon consume.

16. I think that's right. At the point where the two touch, a Big Bang occurs.

However, I'm quite sure that Galactus is destroyed in the process...

15. I've seen the series and read the book...
And the brane stuff was towards the end where things got dense. Best I can recall, when a brane collides with another brane, a Big Bang is the result. What kind of energy is released? I would imagine whatever is the predecessor to dark and light energy...I imagine...???

21. Silly string?
Great for finding tripwires. In theory. Just ask the troops in Iraq.

And don't squirt it on a birthday cake. It's bit, um, flammable.

BS And MS in physics.
He sez string theory is bullshit because so far, it has not proven anything. I'll take his word for it.

but if you have Tivo, look for a show on the Science channel called Parallel Universes, which gives excellent information on the subject.
