OK, I'm going to start another hamburger controversy: The best burger chain.

Yes, I've eaten at Sonic, In & Out, Whataburger, Carl's Junior, and really liked every one of them.

But there's one based in Montreal, with branches all around Quebec, that puts all of them to shame.

Harvey's. Fresh ground, hand-made burgers. Each one made and topped by hand, to order, right in front of you where you can watch. Don't waste your time picking out toppings, just go "all-dressed." Trust me.

I've been PLEADING with their management for YEARS to expand into New England (because we don't have a good regional chain like Sonic), but they won't listen.

Ironically, they're putting one in right down the road at a former Dairy Queen in southeast King County -- the first one I've ever seen in the Northwest. I thought they'd decided against expanding to this part of the country. Now, if we could only get Del Taco (are they still around?) to move up here as well...

I went there for a Six-Dollar burger a few months back and the guy handed me six of their basic hamburgers. The burgers aren't called dollar burgers, so I have no idea how he could have confused the two, particularly when he must get asked for Six-Dollar Burgers (their signature sandwich) ten thousand times a day.

My favorite, though, was asking for a burger, some of those battered chicken fragments, fries and a Coke, and I got a chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese, onion rings, a salad and a Dr. Pepper. It was late at night and there was nobody else in the place, so how the holy hell they could have got every single thing wrong is beyond me.

Peters' Drive In in Calgary is very famous, it's OK as far as I'm concerned, but I know some people who would kill for their stuff. The family sold it recently and it has hit the skids. That's corporations for you.

I'm spoiled now, though, because Fatburger has come to town. Ironflange-girl and I go there sometimes, and it really is the best ever, though Burger Inn, a local chain, is fairly close. Fatburger is consistently good, tho, BI can be spotty. Next time you're passing thru, do yourself a favor and try it. It's in Deerfoot Meadows, near Ikea, right on the road to Fernie. A bit pricey, prolly not good for my arteries, but once in a while can't hurt. . . right?

Krystal's. Saying this seems to cause feelings of disgust in a lot of people, but what can I say? There's just something about those soggy, onion-soaked little burgers. The other thing about Culver's (beside never frozen meat and fresh toppings) is the frozen custard. Amazing. Real ice cream milkshakes. They have good crinkle fries (usually not my favorite but the best chain fries). Also, you can get real mashed potatoes and gravy instead of fries - beleive it or not it is the healthier alternative.

If I lived within a mile of Culver's I would weigh 400 pounds.

how sore all of the marching participants' feet must be. That is one long parade route. It's no wonder the tv cameras are near the beginning of the route when everyone is still fresh. It must be hell down at the other end.

One year long ago I went to see the floats on display the day after the parade and was surprised to see that the Rose Queen and her court were sitting on the most uncomfortable looking bicycle seats. I guess it's better than massive blisters on the feet, but I would imagine they were in pain for days, too!

It is a burger joint that started in the 50's. They make fresh, hand formed, ground steak burgers grilled to perfection. Their famous burger is called the "Wahlburger". Maybe Barenakedlady or morningglow have been...if they have, they will vouch for me. It is a local phenomenon with maybe three or four outlets outside of the original diner. The atmosphere is retro and besides the best hamburgers in the world they make their own root beer served in a frosted mug. It is a gem that you will only find a little south of Rochester, NY. If anyone gets out this way, go. You won't be disappointed.

I grew up in Miami, home of Burger King, and still nothing tops them. I've tried everything listed in this thread so far but give me a basic Whopper and you guys can have the fancy crap. I love thin burgers, no threat of juice ruining the experience.

Plus, Burger King in 30+ years has never screwed up and put cheese on my burgers. That alone is priority one in my book, trumping everything else. I despise hideous cheese. Wendy's, as I've mentioned many times in this forum, is the alltime lowlife in terms of ruining my burgers with despicable cheese, no matter how I try to prevent it. I had another episode in December. Unbelievable. They seem to think it's a bonus if you scream no cheese but they slap it on anyway.

Tommy's was a post-midnight highlight in college in LA, two double burgers and leaning on the wall of the building at Beverly and Rampart. I could go for that right now. Lately I've stopped a few times at Tommys in Barstow on the way back to Las Vegas.

But as someone already mentioned, be ready for a system-shock if you eat at Tommys. That chili taste will overwhelm everything else in your stomach or taste buds for about four days.

Burgerville will purchase about 600,000 eggs a year from Stiebrs Farms of Yelm, Wash. Previously, the chain bought its eggs through Sysco Corp., which received its eggs from a variety of producers.

Burgerville expects to pay slightly more for its cage-free eggs. The increase likely will be tacked onto the cost of breakfast biscuits, bagels and platters when the chain does its annual price review.

Although they don't expect customers to notice a change in flavor, company officials already have gotten a taste of customer reaction. About 300 Portland-area residents, tipped off to Burgerville's move by the national humane society, sent e-mails over the weekend praising the move.

Burgerville customers get partial credit for guiding the 39-restaurant chain to Tuesday's decision, said Tara Wefers, a company spokeswoman.

Burgerville has carved a niche in the sustainable food practices world, choosing not only ingredients produced by area suppliers but also those made with a dash of ethos. For example, the chain buys its free-range beef from Oregon Country Beef, and its free-range turkey meat from Diestel Family Turkey Ranch in Sonora, Calif.

Absolutely fantastic. A poster upthread described it well; you fill out an order form and drop it in a slot. The place is basically a kitchen surrounded by glass. The health ratings in them are always insanely high. The burgers are char-grilled (surprise, surprise) and can be served on a small hoagie roll (the Steak Junior) or a large round roll (steak sandwich). Can't get any fresher. Big thick fries, while not usually my favorite style, are incredibly tasty.

Their web site says "no visit to Raleigh is complete without a visit", and hundreds of thousands of locals would heartily agree--they win "best burger in the Triangle" year in and year out, for good reason.

Burgers made the way I remember them as a kid in L.A., before everything became a corporate-owned chain. Combine them with batter-fried mushrooms (which only sound weird as a fries alternative until you try one) and a mocha shake (hey, what do you expect -- it's Seattle!) and you've got a experience of what "fast food" used to be like in America's glory days. ;-)

They aren't primarily a burger joint--the main thing on their menu is the runza, which is ground beef, cabbage, onions, and seasonings cooked inside bread--but they have several burgers on their menu. I haven't eaten there in several years, but they certainly used to make some of the best burgers around. You can find them all over Nebraska, but they also have a few in Iowa and Colorado, and maybe some other states nearby ...

I used to love the burgers at Joe Theisman's Restaurant in Falls Church, Va when I lived up there.

By default, I now make my own. I use Coleman Beef (no antibiotics and is grain fed beef), mix with some ketchup, mustard, and marjoram and broil to perfection.

Harvey's was founded by Richard Mauran in 1959 with its first location on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill, Ontario. In the next few years it began franchising restaurants throughout southern Ontario, later expanding throughout Canada. The first franchised location was at 238 Bloor Street West in Toronto, which remained there until early 2006, when a new condo project, the Bedford needed its site. Harvey's introduced an interesting concept, in which customers could customize their burgers with a wide array of toppings, organized much like a salad bar. This was later discontinued due to overuse of certain toppings. In the early days Harvey's had a wider selection of toppings than it does now.

Many names were considered by Mauran who was looking for a simple name. "Humphrey's" was one contender. While reading the Toronto Telegram on July 11, 1959 under the heading "Bargains at 2300 Danforth" Mauran found the name "Harvey's" - an auto dealer near Danforth and Woodbine, in East Toronto. The current best selling restaurant is located in Port Colborne, Ontario.

In mid-December of 2006 the Harvey's location in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario caught fire, there was extensive damage to the inside of the building.
