Why oh Why do I watch American Idol? I mean, is it some sick thing?

I think it's funny, sad and entertaining. I'm a Karaoke person and I would think out of 10,000 there's a lot of average/decent singers that don't get on T.V., they just show the best and the worst, imho. :silly:

11. Horrible tonight. What did I expect but...

I used to regard the American Idol auditions as a drinking game. When someone truly horrid took to serenading the judges, I threw back a finger of Southern Comfort. I stopped way before getting drunk, though - if I stuck with the game to the bitter end, I'd probably be six feet under.

I was gonna post this earlier, but I was afraid of straying into muddly waters and offending someone. I really like that American Idol gives exposure to young black female singers. Because I think that there is a wealth of singing talent in that demographic, but when you look at pop stars that are being promoted more often than not they are bleached blond caucasians who, with the exception of Aguilera, really are not that talented vocally. So I think Idol is a great vehicle for singers like this to get exposure that they might not otherwise get; and that is what they need, the exposure but not necessarily to win. Idol gave the world Jennifer Hudson, and if not for Idol she might be working at McDonalds. It's obscene to me to see how well some of these young women can sing and then have to hear pop tunes by people like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton on the radio. Although Idol isn't without it's flaws because of the voting; I really think Kelly Clarkson is talented but I'll always say that Tamyra Gray should have won that first year. But she did get to be on that show Boston Public. So it does give opportunities that might not come otherwise. I don't think it's a bad thing at all, and I don't understand why people react so strongly to it. That being said, I haven't watched it since Ruben Stoddard won it.

...I LOVE a good Black singer...Male or Female.
I hear more "Tone Colors" (I don't know how else to discribe it)
then the average White singer. ....and of course, there's exceptions.

The Harmonics of Black Singers seem to be more rich than the (again, Average)
White.

One Note though: The Pop Singer, BJ Thomas has/had the most "on Key"
voice I have ever heard...damn, the dude hit the notes Perfect..all the time!

20. I have the most fun watching early episodes....

By the end, I'm not that interested because I don't enjoy most of the songs and the overwrought singing styles.

That said, while the Zookids and I were watching a particularly bad singer tonight, I pointed out that we normally would be cracking up. Instead, we were all wincing because the singers were representing us Minnesotans. :yoiks:

Some of these people have severe emotional problems and it is not funny to exploit them. One day one of these people is going to commit suicide. They ought to have them sign a release that allows them to screen out people who are plainly troubled.

I caught about the last half of the show (and that was my first experience watching it at all) and reqally got the feeling that they are looking for people who make "ggod tv" as opposed to talented singer singer.

And as somebody who dislikes confrontation, and feels "empathic" embarrassment for others a lot of what I saw last night made me squirm. You just know the juggler kid's meltdown is gonna be played on radio morning shows as a soundbite for YEARS to come.

Y'know, I've still not heard William Hung's "She Bangs."

Two grown ADULT MEN making fun of a devastated KID on a national show. I thought that was totally dicky. Is that what passes for entertainment in this country, schadenfreude over the crushed dreams of some poor high school kid, however delusional?

Too many people with mediocre talent who have been told they are talented for so long because nobody wants to hurt their feelings. It's nice to see the reality check. I thought Simon was actually professional with regards to his comments this time around. Let me know in a year when Season 7 auditions are on so I can tune in again.

33. Okay, I have the same problem

I have perfect pitch, too. Prior to last night, I'd never seen "American Idol". My husband watches it, though, and we have only one DISH receiver at this point, so guess who got to spend two hours last night I'll never get back?

I felt very badly for the young woman who obviously idolized Jewel. She wasn't a great singer, but to openly mock her? I realize these contestants have probably seen the program before, but I was floored at how nasty they got with her. I'm thinking that criticizing others is the only thing that must bring Simon Cowell joy in life. It's too bad that he will most likely never be on the receiving end of his brand of disdain.

I'll be hiding upstairs tonight with a book. Good thing I can see the rerun of "The Daily Show" and the "Colbert Report" at 10 our time.
