Tackiest Religious Themed "Art" Ever?
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 07:30 PM by Momgonepostal
OK, it's a long story how I happened to stumble upon this little gem on eBay, so I won't go into the gory details. I really have to wonder about the type of person who would make a plate, with John the Baptist's head on it. :eyes:

Here's the listing, just in case anyone wants to get in on the bidding:

http://cgi.ebay.com/St-John-the-Baptist-by-Da-Vinci-Porcelain-Plate_W0QQitemZ220071753195QQihZ012QQcategoryZ4174QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item220071753195#ebayphotohosting

edited to remove bad link.

that when you moved it back and forth his eyes would open and close. Tackiest thing I've ever seen.

19. I have a purple poster of Jesus.
He's taped on the side of the bookshelf by the bathroom door. His eyes supposedly open sometimes.

I must be in another room when it happens.

Par example:

26. It's tacky cuz it's ugly, but not because it's a plate - it's part of a series.
Apparently a series being produced by the ebay seller - that person has scads of porcelain plates, all called "collectors" editions, and all looking like plain old porcelain plates with a photograph a painting or celebrity sprayed on. I'm sure they look shitty in real life.

SO this is clearly not so much about "Ha ha - let's put John the Baptist on a plate, hahahahahaha".

I think your chagrin at tackiness would be merited if it was just John's head poorly appliqued to the plate, but it is, let's be honest, a legitimate piece of art - DaVinci ain't no Kinkade.

The worst of it is, it is highly evident that none of the pictures of the collectors plates is actually a photograph of the collector plate - look at the insane amounts of pixellation in the gold trim, and look at how absolutely clear all the artwork is. Clearly this asshole is taking a picture of a plate, photoshopping the artwork into that picture, posting it on ebay, and saying "This is what the plates look like".

I'm especially weary since the seller has no previous sales.

Looks like either a scam to me, or someone with no work ethic is just cranking out chintzy shit with no effort that not only is ugly to begin with, as we would see it, but is even lazier than just bad and tacky.

33. I've seen worse.
It's just one of Da Vinci's androgynous young men, cut down for a plate. The presentation is tacky, of course.

For example:

Of course, Kinkade usually wins the award. He actually showed artistic talent at one time, but he tarted up his style & sells his stuff at outrageous prices. He makes Black Velvet Jesus look honest.

Lots of good stuff here: www.goingjesus.com/stations/1.shtml

The statues on this page now include a brass nameplate, "Jesus Is My Coach."

Seriously, I have lots of crap like this bookmarked, because people don't believe me when I tell them about it.
