Poll question: Mattress poll! What have you got?

I'm collecting information before I purchase a new mattress. I want to know what people have and what they like. I am seriously considering one of the "memory foam" mattresses, but I worry they hold too much body heat - I've heard they can be sweltering. I've heard the Sleep Number beds are cheaply made and not worth the cost. Which innerspring mattress do you have and how long has it held up? Tell me everything! Thanks! :hi:

8. We bought a piece of memory foam and put it on top of our inner spring mattress

I really like the foam. I like to sleep in, but my lower back was bothering me when I did before we got the foam. The entire foam mattresses are pretty damn expensive. We have a Serta inner spring mattress. It's so-so.

My neighbor sells mattresses and I bought an off brand mattress for our guest room from him that seems pretty good. The number of coils are important as well as the support around the edges of the mattress. Those were the things he told me to look for.

I've heard the memory foam toppers don't last very long and aren't worth the money. But apparently your experience has been better. I saw a queen-sized memory foam mattress for $799 in my area, which seemed reasonable. But that's why I'm researching it, it's a lot of money to spend and I want to get the right thing.

I've heard this pillow tops tend to flatten out after a while. Have you had that problem?

Well, it did where we slept. So it was more lumpy than flattened. And it happened after a year. This was a very expensive Serta Perfect Sleeper Pillowtop, and the warranty doesn't cover lumpy pillow tops. :shrug:

Got our first one last year -- soft-sided, so it looks like a regular bed, and lots of fiber so we don't get seasick. We LOVE it! :bounce:

Does yours have the water tubes inside or the large bladder?
Ours has the tubes in it.
The do wear out after awhile though. We are on our second one. The last one we had for about 15 years. The fiber top started to get lumpy and the support box began to warp.
Also, it REALLY sucks if one of the tubes springs a leak in the middle of the night. You have to tear the whole bed apart, and systematically examine each tube to find the leaky one. Sometimes the stores don't have the replacements in stock either, so you have to wait a couple of days.

22. Two large bladders.

It's a king-sized bed, so we got the individual mattresses. That way, we can each have our own firmness and temperature. It looks and feels like one bed, though, because the bladders fit inside a big soft-sided enclosure. The whole thing, including the conversion kit, was WAY less money than a regular mattress.

We were going to get the tubes, but they didn't come in a big enough size. I think the max was 4" or something like that, and we wanted 6" (or something like that).

if you get the maximum amount of fiber. Waterbeds have really come a long way. I don't like the "swooshy" ones, but ours isn't like that at all. There's almost no motion at all.

18. Just got a Q Sized Posturpeadic memory foam mattress yesterday!

Must say, it fucking rocks. Not once did my hip ache last night, the bed never rocked and woke the baby when either me or my wife got up, and my back does NOT hurt today.

It's righteous!

19. Sleep number is great!

I love my Sleep Number bed. What really sold me was that the bottom part (what you see if you look under your bed) is solid hard plastic. I have 4 cats and the rip the crap out of the undersides of regular box springs and make little forts!!

I was worried about kitty claws puncturing the air chambers..but they are so far inside all the padding that their claws can't get close.

I had a part break after a couple of years. I called, they sent me a new part with a pre-paid box to send the old part back in. Great service.

Very comfortable bed too.

58. I got a big mattress cover...

and put it on the box springs to keep the cats from ripping up the underside. Mine are pretty naughty also. I love 'em though!

21. The other thing I've heard about the memory foam stuff is that it is

temperature sensitive, and if your bedroom is coolish, that mattress will be rock hard when you first go to bed - only after you're in there for a while does the mattress begin to soften and conform to your body. Then it becomes sweltering, or so I've heard.

I have a genuine Tempurpedic pillow, and I can confirm that it is fucking hard when I first go to bed, then it does soften up slightly but it's still pretty firm. It's real heavy, too.

As for my mattress: I have a very expensive ($1200 for a queen set, that's expensive to me!) Serta that is a combo of innerspring mattress with memory foam insert and it's pretty comfy. I don't notice it being really hard when I first go to bed, so that's nice.

get a Comfortaire instead.

Comfortaire (IIRC) is the original company that came up with beds with air chambers. Then a couple of execs left and formed Sleep Number. Same product, but Sleep Number spends a lot more on marketing, so they charge more for their bed.

In any event, we've had a Comfortaire for years, and LOVE IT. The mattress never needs turning, has a 20-year warranty, and will never sag (since it has no springs). And dang is it the most comfortable mattress ever (others who have laid on it say things like "I'm never getting up")

Bought it from the company (essentially) for half price on ebay, in the original packaging. It had been shown in a trade show (thus never used--just pushed on or sat on), but once it had been out of the box, they couldn't sell it as new. So we got a bargain. A couple months later I bought another one, for my dad.

Last time I looked they were still selling the trade show ones on ebay.

35. King-size innerspring, built by a local mattress shop about 14 years ago.

Still holding up beautifully after all of these years. Pretty basic no-frills design (no pillow-top or anything like that), and definitely on the firm side. I've tried sleeping on the super-dense memory foam topper, but I just sink into it and end up with a sore back in the morning, which I've also experienced with pillow-tops. I think I didn't pay much more than around $550, which is dirt-cheap for a king-sized mattress, and it's probably some of the best money I've ever spent, considering the condition that it remains in today. Sadly, his shop went out of business a couple of years after I made my purchase...

Oh, regarding the "heat level", I HATE feeling hot when I'm trying to sleep, and the memory foam clearly feels hotter to me than a conventional mattress top...hope that all helps.

That sleeps like a dream. It was a $4,000.00 mattress in the stores but this one had a tiny hole on the front corner where they had snagged in during moving and they offered it to me for $1,400.00....I told my GF to pay for it and ran out to back my truck up...:)

I have a great "Lady Englander mattress and innerspring but
use a 2" Memory foam" topper over it. The toppers are not all the same. Search for toppers made by Carpenter Company. They are great and do not retain heat. Cost a little more than the other ones but worth the few extra dollars. I had a cheaper one years ago but that one did retain the heat. I spoke with a sleep expert who told me about the differences. The one I have is great for me as I have back problems. Read the information about the need of thicker ones. It seems that research shows that the body does not use any more than 2 inches of the foam. Any thicker and you may be wasting money. I could never go without a topper again. I place it on top of the mattress, under the pad. Never had a complaint. And the total is far less money than buying a memory foam mattress. PS, I do have an older regular foam mattress for the guest room and that one does get warm. I put a topper on that and it cured the heat retention problem.

54. IKEA roll-up deal, on top of another portable mattress I found outside

my house one night after someone else who lives in a different apartment in the house threw it out. Yes, I dragged it in, and put it under my IKEA thingy. Cheap, yes.

I did have an actual frame, before sleeping on the floor but padded by 2 mattri, but it turned out to be damaged *thanks, IKEA* and I didn't have the rental truck anymore so I couldn't bring it back to IKEA, so one night when I jumped on it, it broke. It was a comfy first night, I basically got a free craftmatic adjustable mattress, but it wasn't something I wanted to sleep in forever.
