I got reminded that I owe you all a leg update on my sister

For those who don't remember, my sister fell off a ladder in May, and hasn't walked since. There were a number of problems with her healing early on (including a massive bone infection) and there was some concern that she would lose pretty much everything below the knee, or equally troubling, keep the leg, but none of it would work.

She finally found a doctor who thinks he can not only save the leg/ankle, but bring it back to full function. She is right now enduring what this doctor says is the "worst part" of the process. The doctor has set the leg and ankle and has stabilized everything with an enormous external fixator.

On 1/22 (That's Monday!) the doctor will check progress and if all is as expected (the last time he saw her he said that things were progressing perfectly) he will schedule her next surgery which will complete the reconstruction. Said surgery will include not only a bone graft from her hip, but also artificial materials.

(oh yeah, this sister is due to become a grandmother any day).

having the grandchild to look forward to has helped. Also knowing that there's a light at the end of the tunnel helps.

For a while, when it looked like she may lose the leg, she was VERY depressed. And now, as uncomfortable as she is w/ this thing on her leg, she knows it serves a purpose and that she's going to get use back.

So, she's impatient, but I think very hopeful. Which is to say she's come a long way since October.

I'm no doctor, but your sister's foot looks like it's faring well. That brace is a beast, but I'm glad to hear that the doctor is pleased. Nothing like hearing the phrase "progressing perfectly" to encourage a patient.

Good luck to her on next week's checkup. If she gets a good report, it'll make holding a new grandchild all the nicer.
