I put a pair of kitchen gloves and a 5 paper towels in there in case I have to get into something yucky out on the road - like changing a tire or doing something with oil. I toss it down in the tire well of my trunk so it's not rolling around the trunk all the time. I tried a zippy bag but it kept getting mangled - the peanut butter jar even keeps the oil smell on the gloves in until I can go home and clean them off.

Now that I'm in the chair and don't do my own car work anymore, out of habit I still have it in there.

A peanut butter jar also holds just the right amount of laundry powder for 2 loads while camping or vacation.

My grandfather was a carpenter; he'd nail the lid to the underside of a piece of wood on a rack, fill it with nails etc, and screw it to the lid. Very neat.

a power brake bleeder out of a plastic peanut butter jar. He inserted a valve stem in the lid and some hose. He hooks it up to the compressor to push the fluid out of the brake lines.

since they are plastic they aren't likely to break like a glass jar would. They do break if they fall out of the freezer, but I'd rather clean up broken plastic than broken glass any day.
They are convenient, you just grab a frozen jar of soup and go. They don't cost extra, and if I don't get it back or it gets lost, big whoop.
