The American Idol debate about how mean it is... thank William Hung for what you saw the other night
Let me start off by saying I don't really care about American Idol one way or another. In my view, it's an overrated show that got lucky and caught on and was also lucky enough to produce a decent singer or two... Kelly Clarkson and that girl that's in Dreamgirls... can't think of her name right now and too lazy to go look it up :P

I've been too busy to join in the great debate over the last few days... getting ready for one hell of a spring semester, morning sickness, work, etc. I did, however, sorta watch the shows the other night. I say sorta cause I was swamped in work and had it on in the background. When something especially horrid came on, it caught my attention and I'd take a break and watch... the whole bad car accident theory, where you just have to watch and all.

You know why it seems meaner? Because ever since William Hung had his fifteen minutes of fame, EVERYONE shows up to audition. It doesn't matter if they can't sing, it doesn't matter if they're a little strange looking... hell, I kind of thought some of them went out of their way to be especially horrible or extra weird looking, all in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, they'd get to be the next William Hung.

So blame American Idol, if you must. They get some of the blame here too. But also blame the viewing public out there who just couldn't get enough of watching William Hung make a fool of himself and get PAID for doing it.

There, I got my two cents in AND brought back the dreaded American Idol thread to the Lounge

1. I had the same thought

Disclaimer first: I have NEVER, EVER watched AI. But I heard a couple of the worst auditioners on a morning radio show, and my gut reaction was "Okay, now some of these folks are trying to be the worst because they'll at least get featured on the 'bad auditions' shows--woo hoo they get to be on TEEvee." And those "worst of" shows are the ones everyone makes a point of watching because we all loves us a good car wreck.

Somebody wake me when this stupid show jumps the shark. (Or...has it?)

On edit: Sorry about your morning sickness. Try ginger.

3. To be perfectly honest, I had it on just for the car wreck potential
I have to say though, I won't be watching anymore after the Seattle show. That was just bad in soooo many ways. I felt so bad for the kid who sang "God Bless America" that I finally just turned it off.

I stick to what I said in my OP though... blame William Hung and the people who got off on watching him make a fool of himself. You know that half of them were there, at least in part, because of his success.

2. The first girl they had a back story to.... they crushed her
Usually a back story means you are in. They are trying to introduce product. This girl had everything riding on this and they just completely crushed her and kept her on camera for full effect.

The second night they made the Seattle show look like a freak show and I mean that that is how they portrayed it. That was really low.

So far it looks like they are just going through the motions. I started watching the second year and the goofs got me hooked into the show or at least that time of the week for watching TV.

I don't know they were just mean the first week.

I understand that they finally are going to have a Beatles night and that McCartney may be involved-my wife heard this on the radio they have been trying to do this for a couple of years and so far Paul had said no.

4. Are you talking about the one who idolized Jewel?
Yeah, she was totally crushed and to have Jewel herself there to crush her dreams made it even worse. Then again, how anyone could idolize Jewel is beyond me :eyes:

I kinda hope they don't have a Beatles night though... the night they all massacred Queen songs was quite enough for me.

I don't know about idolize her but Jewel seems okay to me :-)

Maybe they were just trying to set the tone for the season really being a search for real talent........yeah I just took the time to type that. :eyes:

5. You're right....
...I think some of the "train wrecks" know exactly how poorly they sing and know exactly what they're getting into. And they're willing to do that for the chance to be the next William Hung.
