'Papa' Denny Doherty dies
TheStar.com - artsentertainment - 'Papa' Denny Doherty dies
Canadian lead singer for super-group Mamas and Papas was 66

January 19, 2007
Canadian Press
Denny Doherty, the Canadian tenor who was the lead singer of the 1960s super group the Mamas and the Papas, is dead. He was 66.
A family member said this afternoon that the singer-songwriter, originally from Nova Scotia, died earlier today at his home in Mississauga after a short illness.

The Halifax-born Doherty led the group - which included founder John Phillips, his wife Michelle and their friend Cass Elliot - onto the charts with hits including "Monday, Monday," "California Dreamin," "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "Dedicated to the One I Love."

Michelle Phillips is the only member still living. Elliot and Phillips both died in the 1990s.

Doherty started his music career in Montreal in 1960 as the co-founder of the folk group the Colonials, which later became the Halifax Three.

In the mid-'60s, Time magazine called the Mamas and the Papas one of the top two bands in America and the band was inducted into the Rock and Role Hall of Fame.

Doherty was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1996.

In addition to his singing career, Doherty is known for his work on the children's TV series Theodore Tugboat.

For a number of years, he produced one-man shows. He starred in 'Dear a Little Dream," which told the story of the Mamas and the Papas and their music.

RIP, Denny.

1. whoa - major mistake there - Cass Elliott died in 70's
I wish she had waited til 90's - she had a lot more great music in her. Infact, I recently saw a documentary on PBS and Michelle Phillips said Cass Elliot called her after a stellar performance, I think at the Royal Albert Hall in London - she was elated, happier than she'd ever been in her life. And the next day she died.

At least she died happy.

After I heard her version of "Make your Own Kind of Music" on lost, I put it on my Ipod - it's great.

3. Right you are, another mistake...
John Philips died in 2001, according to wiki. So they are 0 for 2 on death dates, huh?

I remember Michelle talking about that last phone call with Cass on PBS.

Here's wiki on Cass, with a reference to the mythical "Fatal Ham Sandwich" nonsense.

2. what a great group they were
that's sad that only one remains. And none of them were particularly old when they died. :(

5. Sorry to hear it.
I'm a big fan of the group; it's weird to think that there is only one member left. RIP, Denny. :(

6. What phenomenal talents

a great combo of voices. I saw his 2003 show "Dream A Little Dream" and he talked about how they came together and how much Cass Elliot anchored their sound. Said when they were really clicking, they would say there was another presence in the room which the referred to as "Harvey"

He lived a great and productive life but it still feels like a loss.

At their peak:
