What oldie songs have you purchased or enjoyed recently?
I just bought Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" and ABC's "Poison Arrow" and "Look of Love" and am listening.

I've recently made folks at work listen to "Midnight Train to Georgia" and Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones", as well as various James Brown of course.

What about you?

1. "Makin' Deals"- The Satans
http://www.thehighhat.com/Pop&Clicks/001/001pop&clicks_pebbles.html

"Makin’ Deals,” Satans. Naming your group “The Satans” in 1960s America didn’t turn out to be the commercial boon these guys might have anticipated. Dabbling in Satanic imagery two years before the Rolling Stones released “Sympathy for the Devil,” but lacking some of the edge of the Stones’ classic (“I’m the guy who makes the deals”). The song makes Satan seem more like a smalltime record hustler than a powerful, merciless deity; in other words, Kim Fowley as Satan. Actually, that would explain quite a bit."

Mick Jagger even copped lyrics, too; "Can you guess my name?" is a huge part of this song, too. Classic garage rock..

2. I listen to old songs everyday.

My playlist at work is almost 1500 songs long - and a good 1/4 of the songs are over 15 years old. My favorites are Al Green and Marvin Gaye, but here are some older songs I've sort of rediscovered and have been listening to heavily recently:

"Sookie, Sookie" by Grant Green (1970...I think)

"Buscando Guayaba" by Willie Colón and Rubén Blades (1978)

"Israelites" by Desmond Dekker and The Aces (1969)

3. They were playing oldies this morning...
while I was waiting for my tire to get fixed (long story). Anyway, I've had "Let's Go To the Hop" stuck in my head all day. Could have been worse. :) Remember when even the most saccharine pop music had neato harmonies in it?

6. I admit to being...
a young fogey. :)

I prefer my music to be music too. I want something that's interesting from a compositional standpoint...not just 3 chords.

10. That's funny -- I just bought and listened to "If You Could Read My Mind"
There's something about that song that gets to me ...

Other recent purchased tunes include "Make a Circuit" by the Polecats (80s), It's My Life by Talk Talk (80s), In Dulce Decorum by the Damned (80s), Drive That Fast by Kitchens of Distinction (80s) ... Hmmm, I'm sensing a pattern here ...

Okay -- two non-80s I bought recently: Time of the Season by the Zombies (60s) and Bang a Gong by T-Rex (also 60s)

15. She's Gone by Hall & Oates
Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 12:33 AM by Strawman
Sure they bit ass later on with "Maneater," and other such retch inspiring crap like "Family Man," but you could make an argument that "She's Gone" is among the most perfectly executed pop music ballads ever.

And that's funny. I was just listening to "Poison Arrow" tonight as well.

21. Drivin faster than you want me to...
I have some from that CD on my mp3 player too. And recently I had to convince someone who is my age (mid-late 30s) that a group called The Babys did exist.

It was really an odd moment.

22. I'm a young'un, but prefer the old songs
I picked up a Nuggets compilation recently ("Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968). "Dirty Water" by the Standells is on it, and a trippy tune I like on it called "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius as well, with none other than Glen Campbell on lead vocals.

My favorite 80s song probably changes by the hour, but "The Look of Love" is up there as one of my favorites. I like "Be Near Me" as well.
