4. Oh yeah. SSDD.
Pass the cornflake-crusted chicken. My pitbull ate the doggie bag of Olive Garden food and if I don't get something to eat soon I'll have to go to Wal-Mart.

17. Just don't let your kids run amuk in the aisles and annoy the old senile people
shopping for cheap cigarettes there.

5. I gotta admit to mixed emotions about Walmart.
I don't like to go there.
I don't like 'big box' stores in general.
I don't like the way they treat their employees.
Read Barbara Ehrinreich's "Nickled and Dimed".

But they do employ a hell of a lot of people who might not be employed if the Walmart wasn't there.
And I know they drive the 'mom & pop' stores out of business, but the mom & pops don't employ as many as the Wally World does.

It's a puzzlement.

8. Wellll.......
If the Wally World wasn't there, there'd be the Mom and Pops but there'd also be clothing stores, hardware stores, grocery stores, toy stores, sporting goods stores, drugstores, appliance stores, linen stores, lawn and garden stores, etc. which all combined would employ a decent chunk of people AND put money back into the community because they're more likely to be community owned, not owned by the good ol' Walton family.

14. Yeah, I know. Example:
Back in the day before I achieved so much social consciousness ;-)
I learned a new Walmart Super Center was coming to our town.

I mentioned it to the lady who ran our local Hallmark store.
She said "I'll be out of business within 6 months after they open."
And she was.
:-(

18. They're putting a supercenter (one of very few in CA) up the road from me
I expect to see at least one nearby grocery store go under. Maybe two. Probably a drug store, too. Most of the smaller stores nearby will make it, because they're catering to the area's large Vietnamese population and not really in competition with Wal-mart for most things.

23. Some interesting stats:
Our town has 2 grocery stores.
Winn-Dixie and Walmart.
Used to have another, but it closed.
We always shop at W-D, although their prices are generally higher.
I don't want them to leave.

I can't remember the numbers, but I looked up stats for population needed to support grocery stores.
Turns out our 'retail area' would support 4 grocery stores.
And this is a fast growing area.
Soon we could support 5.
Are they afraid to go up against Walmart?

I want a Trader Joe's and a Costco, dammit!

26. My neighborhood's gained population and lost a grocery store.
The three that remain have all gone downhill. I expect when the SuperWalmart goes in, one of the two lower-income groceries will go. Maybe both. They're both pretty ratty but one is union and the other local, I'd take either over WalMart.

9. Oh yeah, my friend and fellow Dem has a bumper sticker on her car.
Helen is in her 80s and as sharp as the proverbial tack.
It says, in large, boldface type:
WAL-Mart SUX
The Life Out of a Community

Go Helen!

25. Wal Mart Is Evil
it is also the defact owner of the state I live in

They've donated millions to the state

you can't go 50 feet without a wal mart

I shop at one of their grocery stores because it has cheaper prices and better produce and meat than any other around me.

24. Yes, I feel for her because she is doing the best she can.
There's a difference between people like me who can say 'screw Walmart' without a bit of worry about the consequences and those like her who are caught in the bind of shopping where the food is the cheapest versus shopping on her principles.

If any mention of anything can hijack a thread quicker than smoking, I dunno what it is.
