1. Soft drink. Distant second: soda. Definitely not 'pop' although the people...
around where I live always say pop.

12. I've heard of that
But I always wondered - when you ask for Coke in a restaurant or something but you want root beer, how do you say it? Or do you order a root beer but just use "Coke" as a general term for carbonated beverages, as in "Where's your Coke?"

13. If I was ordering in a restaurant, I'd be specific and say root beer
But if I making a shopping list or asking my husband to pick up a non-alcoholic carbonated beverage I would just say Coke. Born and raised in Muncie, Indiana--everyone there just calls it Coke. But, at least I got out before they started filming Armed and Famous. If confusing beverage terminology is the only cross I bear, I consider myself lucky.

25. To reply to my own poll: I call it pop.
Deb (my partner, aka ThinkBlue1966) grew up in North Carolina, calling it either "soda" or just "Coke". But I've managed to brainwash her over the years, so now she calls it pop too. :D

28. Always known as "pop" in Western NY.
I lived in NC and it was "soda" there. Could never conform to that, even after four years down there. Here, in Western NY (much like western PA) soda is baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, or soda water used to make an ice cream soda.

29. You left out what most people from Massachusetts
call it, which is "tonic." I think only those of us in Mass. and around New England call it that.

On the other hand, when I was in SoCal, I had to call it "soda" because people thought I was a nut when I called it tonic.

46. Coke. We southerners call it Coke. Everything is a Coke. Sometimes I say soft drink.
Only immigrants from other parts of the country call these drinks pop or soda or soda pop.
