And why do we need a "Severe Weather Alert Team" to tell us that it's 65 degrees and partly cloudy?

1. Because weather is great drama...
Seriously, we have a "Storm Team 8" and "On Target Weather" here in Grand Rapids. Two seperate stations.

But yeah, if we get two inches of snow it's called a blizzard :eyes:

2. And why is weather "news?"
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 12:37 PM by Orrex

Ditto for traffic. Barring unusual circumstances, of course. A standard hour of local news coverage includes fifteen minutes spent on traffic conditions, fifteen spent on the weather, twenty spent on sports, five on a shooting, and five on world news and national politics.

Enough already!

Here in the Pittsburgh area, they show the same four pictures of the same four motionless highways every morning on the news. There may be slight variance due to precipitation, etc., but they're otherwise identical:

Monday:
"The parkway east is backed up along its whole length. Back to you, Kelly."

Tuesday:
"The parkway east is backed up along its whole length. Back to you, Kelly."

Wednesday:
"The parkway east is backed up along its whole length. Back to you, Kelly."

Thursday:
"The parkway east is backed up along its whole length. Back to you, Kelly."

Friday:
"The parkway east is backed up along its whole length. Back to you, Kelly."

:mad:I'm so mad that I almost included an apostrophe in "its," for pity's sake!

14. I used to laugh at the WXDX traffic report
"it's rush hour, everything is backed up like it always is. That's the traffic report."

They should also say, no can drive in the rain, like always. Or look, there's snow (usually a dusting) on Route 30!

DIdn't know you were a Pgher, Orrex. Whereabouts?

15. I used to live in Dormont, but now I'm in in Lawrence County
I still work in the North Hills, though--I just can't say good-bye to that lovely McKnight traffic.

Where are you?

20. Heh!
All of our weather forecasts are so dramatically named. Next on Accu Severe Weather Watch coverage "There's been 0.5 inches of rain, the Mon Wharf is flooding, oh no!!!!" :wow: :nuke:

21. At least yours says "the whole length"
Ours will say "The Schuylkill is back up from the Walt Whitman in through Vine, from Vine out to the Girard Ave exit, from Girard through the Conshohocken Curve, and from the Curve out through Valley Forge."

Okay, why not just say "from the Walt Whitman to Valley Forge" or simply "the length"?

11. One of our local news' Web sites
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 04:58 PM by MorningGlow
has a big-ass "hurricane watch" section on their weather page. Hurricane watch. In western New York. In winter. Ooooo-kay...

On edit: Aww  they redesigned their site and got rid of it. I was keen to put a linkie up...

13. Considering that hurricane force winds hit Europe last week...
I am not surprised to see that. However it is not really hurricane season so why would that be up in that format? Just drama?

6. I hate it when they freak out because it's snowing in MICHIGAN
There is more cause to freak out when it isn't snowing in Michigan in the winter. But they don't seem to freak out over global warming.

8. Lake effect snow is great drama!!
 Yep, here on the West side they freak out over two inches of snow. Schools close and people drive like they are in the worst conditions ever. Then the news harps on about it calling it the "blizzard of the month." that is until the next snowfall. LOL!!!

19. One of our local station uses this redundant catch-phrase "Forecast 8 Futurecast"
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 10:17 AM by izzybeans
It is like nails on the chalkboard. Every time they forecast the day's and week's weather they say "A look at the Forecast 8 Futurecast...". OYE! Stop it.
