Anyone else love HBO's Rome
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 03:49 AM by JCMach1
Waiting to download Episode 2 of the second season on torrents... :)

Watched season 1 on television over here and could not wait the 12 months to start getting season 2.

2. I've only seen one episode, but...
I am surprised how it seems to be just like The Sopranos, with different dialects and all that, but really seems to have been cooked from the same recipe....

4. Nah.
Rome is fun, but it is more a potboiler than the Sopranos. Rome is big, obvious, and over the top, not as well-written as the Sopranos at all.

8. Well, first off, it's pronounced "In-treeg."
And not "Inter-goo."

Secondly, everything is explained in this simple diagram.

11. I love "Rome"
Even though I know how it all ends-Mark Anthony will marry Octavia, and Octavian will outsmart them all in the end.

I like how Cicero is portrayed as a back-stabber, Anthony as a whorish rogue, Brutus as a man with no backbone, etc.

16. Hey! You have to put "Spoiler" in your title
if you're going to tell us all how it ends!

But seriously, I can't believe the season started without me. When did that happen?

26. But Cicero was the way he was because he was a self made man...
All the other Senators and Councils around him were tied to the Roman aristocracy whereas he could not afford to offend any of them...

The Aristocracy was very tight knit even if they went to war with each other at the drop of a hat....

There was always a rumor that Brutus was JC's illegitimate child....

12. I like it, I watch it, but it still doesn't hold a candle to "I, Claudius"

Now That was riveting television!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074006

Just some of the cast:

Derek Jacobi .... Claudius
Siân Phillips .... Livia
Brian Blessed .... Augustus (the name the older Octavian was given by the Roman Senate, BTW)
George Baker .... Tiberius

John Hurt .... Caligula

Patrick Stewart .... Sejanus

John Rhys-Davies.... Macro

Bernard Hill .... Gratus

Simon MacCorkindale .... Lucius
Guy Siner .... Pylades

13. Here's the "I, claudius" web page
http://www.historyinfilm.com/claudius/

and hat tip to Aristus who suggested I buy the DVD boxset.

But I love Rome, too. I upgraded my cable service as I bought the Season I DVD boxset and was completely HOOKED.

I counted the days until the airing of Season 2.

And like the poster above, I thank Goddess for On Demand.

pretty soon I will know all of the dialogue by heart. :)

14. By Jupiter's Bolts, Yes!
As an aspiring amateur Classicist, I find it to be an excellent mix of fascinating history and 'Dynasty'-style soap-operatic intrigue.

18. Yeah, but she's one of those characters
that you just love to hate! What's funny is that the historic Atia was upheld as a paragon of Roman virtue. The writers of the show chose to subvert the official party-line by making her a conniving villian.

24. Hey MM!
I'm doing well. Evil Trial Lawyering is keeping me busy, but not too busy to keep me from popping over to DU once in a while. Maybe I'll make it out to a MinneDUers gathering again if I'm lucky.

23. peas in a pod, I'm afraid
I think Atia is worse as she's a scheming witch. And she tries to be coy about it.

Servilia is more upfront with her evilness.
