united 93--just watched it last night

http://imdb.com/title/tt0475276/

Emotionally-packed and moving fact-based story about the passengers aboard doomed flight United 93 that was the fourth terrorist attack plane on September 11, 2001. The passengers on the flight, as a result of a delay on takeoff that placed them behind the planned attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, are able to learn of the attacks and discern that this is no mere high-jacking. While the real events that caused the ultimate crash of the plane can never be known, the events depicted would appear to be as might be expected. The scariest part of the film is the unpreparedness of the FAA and the military in dealing with the situation, which is also well-depicted here.
On September 11, 2001, America witnessed three terrorist attacks when three planes were hijacked and destroyed the pentagon and the two world trade centers. However, one plane in the mist of the hijacking never reached its target. Instead the passengers fought back to save thousands of lives even if it meant they too, would die. This is their story. The story of flight 93.

Four young Arabians prepared themselves physical and spiritually in order to hijack flight United 93, the night before the fatal 11-S-2001. Same day, other three planes were hijacked as well and reached their targets: The World Trade Center and The Pentagon. British director Paul Greengrass gives a close version about what could possible happened inside the plane, basing upon the last recordings from the pilot cabin and the telephone calls made by the passengers to their beloveds. The movie shows how the passengers tried to subdue the terrorists, one of them with a bomb tied to his waist, once they had killed both pilots and one of the passengers. Meanwhile, we see the prevailing crisis in the Air Traffic Control, trying to deal with a situation which leads to close all the country's aerial space. Despite the courage of the passengers, the United Airlines' plane, with an original route to San Francisco, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, without reaching its target, located in Washington D.C.

September 11, 2001. The nation was under attack by suicide hijackers, who hit Three famous buildings. The fourth plane United 93 was a story of 40 passengers who were strangers. Who sat through terrifying event. But found courage, rebelled and become hero's. And stood united.

2. i think it is worthy of an oscar nomination...
and not just because of the subject matter.

no sentimentality at all. just as if i was really there.

and the ending from from green grass to blackout.

what else has he done?

15. if it is the same style as united 93--then i am sure it is
powerfully done and masterfully executed. this had the look and feel of real life minute by minute.

so nonchalant at first, nobody taking the information seriously at first.

how long had it been since the last hijacking:wow:

21. That's exactly what I thought about it and reason why it was so good
Although World Trade Center was based on an actual event that happened during 9/11, it just lost it's appeal because it was big hollywood names dramatizing the heros.

'United 93' had no celebrities - it took you too the event and lead you into the plan with perhaps happened when the people on the plane tried to stop the hijacking.

I think it deserves an Oscar

10. I know the feeling
That's why I like his work -- it has a very documentary feeling to it, down to the camera work and often using non-actors.

14. I thought it was terrible.
Not because of the content or anything like that....I just thought the movie sucked. There wasn't enough character development to make me care about these characters.

Although it's based on a true story, if a movie doesn't make me feel for the characters, then I don't like the movie.

And in this movie, I didn't care.
I just wanted them to crash the plane so I could leave.

16. ok--
i am ususally a BIG one for character development also...but, finally (to me anyway) the character emerged as a cohesive unit. they all became one and in the end i was pulling for that one.

and the way the terrorist were portrayed...just confused kids, it was sad

17. It never worked for me.
Just a big old mess of a movie.

I never saw WTC directed by Oliver Stone...that one seems more soap opera-ish to me, so I might like that one better. At least it seems in that one, there is more character development.

But like in real soaps, they really make you feel for the characters and in movies, I need to relate and care about the characters in order to enjoy it.

19. I disagree
I truly enjoyed this movie because it wasn't some character driven plotline with a story and Nic Cage & other big names playing the roles. It was like we woke up that morning and were able to visualize just what lead up to the events and what might have happened if we were on the plan. I like the fact that there were no big celebrity stars in the picture. I cried like a baby - it was a great picture and deserved the rewards.

I'm not ready for the Titanicization of 9/11 - I'll probably skip seeing World Trade Center

20. I liked how there weren't big names either
but regardless of subject matter or based on real events, I need to 'feel' for the characters and I just didn't in this picture.

I'm like that with all movies.

We just have different viewiing habits.

25. thing is--
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 10:24 AM by wildhorses
by the end-- THEY were ALL ONE character...all of them together as one cohesive unit...

and just like traveling in real life on an airplane how we are all into our own lives, going about our business, how truly boring we are...

no interaction, no personal moments...

it is the anti-character and i think he pulled it off

and really i am HUGE on charcter devlopment and arc

ask my mom:P

28. well, he stated it so eloquently imho
its out there if one just stays with it in the beginning...because at first it is so fucking obvious that NOTHING is happening then HELLO

motherfucker it is happening ALL OVER THE PLACE...and still

he just let's the camera keep unfolding the story...never pushing...just REAL LIFE!!!

the fact that i did NOT cry all the way through it ...

to me that is the accomplishment...

he could have so GONE for cheap sentimenatlity

it is in the holding back...

i only teared up twice...

when they were making the phone calls and she gets the answering machine..has to leave the message saying i love you...jack? are you awake?

and then of course by the very end i found myself pulling for them that somehow they would get through that door in time and them the nosedive to the greenfields and no SOUND just black screen...

it is UNDERwhelming and that is harder to pull of than overwhelming imho

32. Yup! He sure did
And, most of the main military men and women were themselves, and some of the airport personnel.

It's the same in Bloody Sunday... or some of the people who died are played by relatives.

... I'll pass on United 93 and watch something else.

I remember wanting the Titanic to just "SINK already!". I don't need to go through that again.

Well, not until the 2008 elections.
