How would you tell your SO, the boiler went AND the car can't be fixed.
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 01:47 PM by halobeam
Small car fire (brake issue) caused damage beyond what we can afford to pay and what the car is worth. Car is GONE. This is the confirmation call I recieved from the auto repair guy about a half hour ago. Exactly three hours before, I realized the boiler DIED. House is at 58 degrees and dropping. We already had plumber in three times $500. each time, in the past 7 weeks, each time telling us, it's on it's way out. One day it just won't go on. Well today's the day.

If I had a car, I'd drive to GA and visit family. He's gonna cry (I think, actually I hope so, because if not, he's gonna BLOW!)

Everytime we just think we can pay the damn bills, we get bammed. Any suggestions?

1. What does "boiler died" mean?
Boiler exploded, steam & water all over the place?

Or just won't light? Check pilot? Check water level?

Three plumber visits at $500 each, you could almost have got a new boiler for all that.

5. Wont light, pilot fine, water fine.
didn't explode. We replaced the electrical component to the boiler last time. They were sure that was why it wasn't turning on. It worked after they put a new one in. They stated because it's lived full term (for lack of better terms).. not my expertise (obviously)... they said it could still go for a few other reasons, and it's time to get a new one. (Which of course we knew right then and there, we were fighting the clock against the funds)

2. Tell him something really worse first, then say just kidding
Like, tell him a tree fell on the house and caved in the roof. before he gets too upset, say, just kidding, roof is fine. But the boiler's dead.

10. they did tell us its a matter of time....
they strongly suggested we get a new one. We just didn't have the money (right before the holidays, plus one of our childrens birthday plus brothers wedding all during these weeks. (Not to mention the 3000 put into both junk cars since October. It wiped us out. I am assuming you said that because we didn't get the new one, but we didn't because we didn't have the amount we needed to get a full one, credit to charge it, etc. They said it could go in a week, a month, a year... we gambled (not so sure how much gambling really, when considering we didn't have the funds to purchase new), but nonetheless..lost.

13. I recently had to tell the STBE that my car needs a new transmission.
No way can we afford it. There were no tears, fortunately, just mute acceptance. That's worse than anger IMHO. I hope it goes well for you.

15. The boiler thing will be self-explanatory because the house will be cold
You'll have to mention the car when he wants to go out and get a new heater.

He's going to have to cope. If he actually explodes and yells at you like it's your fault...he's got issues.

19. Update....
I read the water level wrong. OMG. Blush. All that, and I'm still relieved.

Once he was relieved I made a ridiculous mistake, I said, well, thats the good news now, and his face dropped.

Then I told him about the car.

He is distraught and crying (on the inside). We will get past this. He's now joking about how life is. I really do like him. Well, now he's looking for dinner LOL... OOPS....knew I forgot something!

anyway, thanks to everyone for taking time out for me, and also for some laughs that I very much needed.

20. So, how's the boiler this morning?
I hope your house is warmer than yesterday.

Watching the news this morning, our temp is dropping this week to under 10 degrees (Fahrenheit). So I expect my boiler to work overtime. (Great Lakes area)
