My daughter-in-law had a cat that went wacko...
She sliced up har arm badly; and for no reason whatsoever. The only thing she could think was that the cat was jealous of their new baby. They didn't want to risk having anything happen to one of the kids, so cat now lives on her dad's farm.

4. looks declawed to me
probably the best reason *not* to have a cat declawed, aside from the fact that it's barbaric and inhumane. They sometimes are very aware they are defenseless and turn to biting instead.

As annoying as their little claws can be, I could never bring myself to do that to a cat... :(

8. only some of them
notice how he never even lifted his paws like a normal cat would...most aggressive cats who still had their claws would have swiped at the camera through the cage bars when it came that close. This looked to me like a cat that was fully aware he no longer had defenses in his front paws. He probably had an attitude to begin with and this just made it worse. I'd rather be clawed by a cat than bitten by one any day.

10. He reminds me of an injured cat I found when I was a kid...
My dad and I wrapped him up in an old blanket we had in the back of the car, after searching for his owner with no luck. We took him to a nearby vet who had later-than-usual hours. They kept him for a few days, but we still couldn't locate the owner. We brought him back home, and while he was fine during mealtime, he really did NOT enjoy taking his pill. The cat pierced the "web" between my thumb and forefinger. Serious pain!

In an odd turn of events, after having the cat for a little over a month, the owner called us on Thanksgiving morning. :-)

21. Both of my adopted cats had been declawed, and they're the most mellow...
...cats I've ever seen in my life. So, no, I don't think declawing makes a cat go psycho on you like that. And they don't bite (or even hiss).

22. yes it does for some
I didn't say all, I said some, and I learned it from experience working for many veterinarians over the years. These animals are not fun to handle. Luckily, more and more vets are refusing to do that surgery.

24. Good lord, I didn't speak in absolute terms, either.
Chill, mkay? The poster asked if declawing a cat brings on this behavior. I am simply relating what my experience has been with two humongous declawed male cats.

27. I assisted with that surgery many times
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 06:26 PM by idgiehkt
Every time this topic comes up I can still hear the ripping sound the blade makes as the bed of the claw is cut through. It is basically the same as if someone cut your finger off just above the first joint. And then to have to see the cats hunched over in the cage in pain after because they can't prop themselves up on their front paws like they normally do, and the looks on their faces, bewildered and in pain but not knowing why or what has happened to them. And then having to deal with the ones that become biters SUCKS. I don't have fond memories of that surgery, and I have strong feelings about it. You were relating your experience with your two cats, and I was relating mine having witnessed scores of declaws over the years. It looks to me like that cat's claw beds are collapsed and I am guessing that is why he is so mouth-aggressive. He isn't hurt...no way would a vet staff be filming and laughing at a cat acting that way out of pain.

34. Yes, I know exactly what is involved in declawing.
I adopted mine ALREADY DECLAWED, and they have been 100% indoor cats their entire lives with me (10 and 12 years). I am in no way advocating declawing. ALL I was saying is that MY EXPERIENCE is that it didn't freak out the cats. They're cool and mellow. Mine also swipe with their paws all the time, so that behavior doesn't apply across the board, either. I have no idea what the situation is with the cat in the video; the other poster wanted to know if that's what declawing does to a cat, and my response is simply "not always, not in my experience."

And do we actually know the cat is at a vet's, or that it's hurt? Caged up in unfamiliar surroundings will freak out a lot of cats (even those WITH claws), especially one that might be up for adoption (which is what my impression of the video was).

25. Never, never do that to a cat...
The vet I worked for refused to do them. I believe the act of declawing cats was outlawed in England. It's a horrible thing to do to an animal, and one of the many reasons I'm not a vet now.

29. the vet I worked for first did
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 06:26 PM by idgiehkt
they did declaws, tail and ear docs.

And they were seen as a 'good' vet because they would only euth clients' pets, not just anyone off the street. One kennel I worked at was attached to a vet that would euth anything that walked in the door as long as the people had the money; he once euthanized a perfectly healthy three-year old black lab because her owners said she was "a pain to travel with".

edit: of course I agree, it is a barbaric, nasty surgery and the sound of the claw apparatus being amputated alone is enough to still give me chills.

31. The very first cat I personally euthanized was perfectly healthy.
I was an intern at a clinic, and the doc told me to go get him from the back. The owners dropped him off to be destroyed because he was peeing in their house. When I went to get the cat, he was in his litter-box peeing away as if to say, "See? I'm really a good cat..." He knew why I was there and he didn't want to go peacefully. It was terrible. A few more "bad experiences" like that made me realize I didn't want to be a vet, and I left college to pursue other things.

35. That's so sad...
If only you could have given him to someone who would love him...

Sometimes cats don't use their litter box because they need a different kind of litter, or because the litterbox isn't cleaned daily.
So unfair!

when he got neutered. When I went to pick him up, I heard screaming like that from the back and immediately knew it was him. The techs kept trying to tell me it wasn't> Then one of them came out, bloody hand wrapped in a towel and said "Miss, you wanna come get your cat?"

and kennels too. LOL, the one that this one reminded me of was also an orange tabby. And you really never know which kitty will get you...I had a flame-point himmie knock my glasses off my face one time, and it was just a kitten maybe two months old. Good thing I was wearing them or it could have been my eyes, lol.

edit: I just remember another orange tabby from hell that I once had to handle. Finally the vet took over because none of the staff could handle it. He held the cat down to do whatever to it, and the cat got loose and bit him right on his side below the ribs. It was horrible, but it's funny now, but the cat left several teeth in him. I would rather handle dogs any day over cats.

However, she's also very smart. She only tries to bite the vet, not ME. So they just make sure to have me with her, and she's ok. I can't blame her... I mean, she sees me every day, and I feed her, and she sees the vet once a year for shots and butt-temperature-taking. Who, of course, is she going to bite?
