5. Great minds think alike
I just picked that movie up yesterday and that is what I was going to say. Wonderful movie, and it was River's last movie before he died.

9. Battleship Potemkin. Eisenstein was an absolute genius. Even though the Odessa Steps
scene has been endlessly parodied, the actual sequence, the lens blown out of the woman's glasses, the carriage, and no blood, just the soldiers aiming and a whiff of smoke...then the bodies rolling...
The soldiers carrying the dead sailor's body onto the docks with the sign "He died for soup."

17. Well, if you're gonna do that one
then you gotta do "Fail-Safe."

Same film; just not a comedy.

12. Reds by Warren Beatty...awesome!
Matewan by John Sayles

Grapes of Wrath starring Henry Fonda...a movie that would probably not get made today.

Norma Rae

Some documentaries...

Fahrenheit 9/11
Inconvenient Truth
Jesus Camp...not a progressive movie but will let you know what fundie America really teaches their kids.

15. i haven't seen as many movies as most people
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 11:42 PM by pitohui
a well made movie even if you don't agree w. the conclusions, if there are conclusions, the open endedness is kind of what i like about it, "bowling for columbine"

another not yet mentioned is "malcolm x"

if michael mann's movie "ali" is considered progressive, i would put that in there somewhere

The Tim Robbins movie that basically foretells the coming of the Republican Revolution, and what it means for America.
