I've always listed that as one of the many, many scenarios that prove heterosexual marriage is not particularly sacred. A couple can get a quickie marriage in Nevada, and there's no shortage of people to conduct the wedding ceremony, like Elvis impersonators.
And we let any heterosexuals get married, as long as they are not close blood relatives. Crack whores, drug dealers, gang bangers, bank robbers, child molesters, murderers, step on up!
I've told this story before but it's worth repeating again.
In the 1970s, my mother had a thing for bikers. Well, and for picking men that were not good fathers/husbands. My biological father was a pedophile, and they divorced when I was around 6 or 7.
By 1976 we were living in Sacramento and my mom was hanging out with members of the Hells Angels. So it wasn't uncommon for one of these thugs to come visit.
Well, someone fixed my mom with a pen pal at Folsom prison (actually, I think that's why we moved to Sacramento) and we'd go to Folsom every so often to visit this guy. I think when he got out they were married briefly.
My mom wasn't done with prisoners. She started corresponding with a guy at San Quentin. Let's just say he was not a good person. There were many occasions where mom pulled me and my sister out of school and we'd head out to San Quentin for a visit.
So, eventually this guy is released. Just prior to the release the prison chaplain performed the wedding ceremony (paid for by the tax payers) and at some point soon after he came home to be my new step-dad.
Now, picking a prisoner as a spouse is not the best decision you can make. Picking one who is racist and drug-addicted is an even worse decision. Not that anyone cared what might happen when mom brought home her newly released convict home to be the step-father to her six and 9-year-old (me).
If mom had done her homework she would have learned some things about the tattoos on "dad's" hands and arms. Being a little kid I didn't know what a swastika was, but step-dad had several of those. My mom, who would have been 30 or so at the time, really should have paid better attention to her future hubby. The swastika tattoos would have been enough for me not to continue the relationship.
In addition to the swastikas, he had prison tattoos of spider-webs on his elbows. In many prison gangs, this indicates the person with the spider-webs has killed a rival in prison. Since step-dad was in with the white supremacist crowd, that meant he killed at least two black men in prison.
And so, this monster was allowed to come home to us, where we spent the next ten years being abused, physically and sexually.
And as I think back on those years, I have to wonder, why the fuck do we let fucking child molesters and abusers get married in PRISON at taxpayer expense, but don't allow two men or two women to marry? It's ludicrous.
